In addition, they keep her in a tiny tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, promised to come up with a plan with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to open water eventually. The plan would have included a sanctuary located on the west coast of Washington where she could live for the rest of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die.
