Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade increases the level of an item level upgrade by 3. Each upgrade also boosts an unspecified substat.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used to upgrade weapon, armor, tool, and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased from NPCs of item level upgrade upgraders in a variety of currencies. They can also find them on random treasure lists. Once an upgrade is purchased it can be applied to any weapon or item level upgrade tool with a button, which will show an item's preview at the next upgrade level in the event that the player has enough materials.

Upgrade costs vary depending on the slot of the item upgrader mod and the current level of the item. For instance weapons are more expensive than gloves, bracers or bracers.
