Unfortunately, she didn't get a chance to return to the ocean.

Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also place her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, vowed to work on an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, Spix macaw Lifespan to move her eventually to open water. The plan would have included a sanctuary on Washington's west coast in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive human care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home and surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that are bonded with family members until they die. Lolita who has been alone at Seaquarium in isolation for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Activists from across the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and her eventual release into the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

However, the non-profit organization Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is aging quickly and her health has deteriorated.

Since her captor doesn't need to reveal the information, it's not clear what specific health issue the orca is suffering from. However, a database of necropsies taken from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often buy a macaw factor in the death of orcas kept in captivity.

Despite the health issues that continue to plague of Lolita many believe that she could be closer than ever before to an unspoiled life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has made a pledge to moving the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a sanctuary at sea where she could swim deep in the ocean and even be reunited with the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the beloved whale who died on Friday of what was believed to be a kidney issue.
