Most robotic vacs require some maintenance, like emptying (and occasionally rinsing) the bin, and wiping cameras and sensors. They also require to be connected. Many have smartphone apps for scheduling, setting up settings and more.

The iRobot Roomba 980 is the most recent in the series of top-of-the-line shark i robot vacuum vacuum cleaners that are an essential part of every modern household. This model is extremely powerful suction and a HEPA filter that can assist anyone suffering from allergies. In addition it comes with a powerful battery which can clean for up to two hours and it automatically returns to its dock when it is full.

It also comes with the feature of smart mapping which uses multiple sensors to determine the areas in your home that require attention and make a tidy route around them. We've seen this technology in action and it does a great job of maneuvering around toys placed on the floor or furniture legs that are sticking out of the ground. It also has a sensor that will snap Roomba back to reality when it starts to drift away from its original position.

iRobot has also included a set of rollers underneath the Roomba that do not have bristles, and are therefore more likely to withstand knots than earlier models. These rollers are also taller and can be tucked under beds or couches with low sides. They're designed to make the model more movable on various floor types.

What sets the Roomba 980 apart from other high-end models, though, is its incorporation of the latest dirt detection feature that uses cameras to detect bits of embedded dirt. This is a nice improvement over the previous version that relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage technique to bounce around the room and clean everything at minimum three times from various angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on both carpets and hard floors. Its score on the low pile carpet was impressive, Ihome Robot vacuum and Ihome Robot Vacuum it got a very high score on mid pile, too. It did a great job getting rid of pet hair, however it struggled with the thick and long pet hair that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the best robot vacuum with mapping performing robots we've reviewed, despite these minor limitations. It's also less expensive than other top-of the-line models. It has a lot of features you would expect from a top model, but doesn't come with all the fancy apps or smart home integrations you'll find in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba is easy to set up and get running right away. After removing the battery pull tab and yellow bin insert from undercarriage, all you have to connect it to its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, press its big "Clean" button and let it go to work. It will automatically return to its dock when its battery runs out or it's full of debris. It also has indicators at the top for when the bin is full, it's time to recharge or its Wi-Fi signal has gone out.
