Lolita's Personality

Despite their adoring appearance they are loud and can be a distraction to those who live near. They are capable of loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be a nuisance in condominiums and apartments, or near children who might be scared by their noise.

This species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. Due to this the only way to determine sex is via DNA testing. Once the bird's sex is established and breeding can begin, breeding can commence.

Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to cease performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, activists hoped that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to return to the sea.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, and over-exerting her with head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, making her lose weight and weakening her immune system. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates known as Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her to be a family member and Chestnut-fronted macaw Price plan to eventually move her to open water. The plan would have included a facility located on the west coast of Washington in which she could reside for the rest of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen will be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and surrounded by the ocean itself not an empty concrete tank.

Lolita's Diet

The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they offer their killer whales, specifically Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is endangered in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that some consider too small for her.

Lolita's Health

The decision comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even meet the orca thought to be her mother. Unfortunately these plans came late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a kidney issue.
