Upgrades give you an increase in certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by +3. Each upgrade also increases the random substatus.

The upgraded gear is usually more useful, unless the item upgrades is not required by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a large variance in stats (like Eth Titan weapons). Upgrades aren't as valuable for those with higher variance because of the requirement to roll the perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of armor or weapons. The item used to upgrade the Item Level Upgrade will be consumed and can't be used again. Upgrades can be applied to enchantments.

The upgrader is located in every major city, and is accessible at any time to upgrade your gear. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader every couple of weeks to keep your equipment up to date.

The cost of upgrading will vary based on the current item level of the gear being upgraded, but will always be cheaper than buying new equipment from other sources. For example upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points, while purchasing the same item from another player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapon, armor, tool, and accessory upgrades. They can be purchased by players from NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for different currencies, and can also be found in random treasure lists. Once an upgrade is purchased, it can be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor with an button, which will show an image of the item at the next upgrade level when the player has enough materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the item slot and current item level, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers for example. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a number of crests, with some upgrades having a discount to reduce the cost of the Flightstones or crests that are used. Once an item has been upgraded to a certain amount it is able to be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower price.

Upgraders for items are available in many places, including the main island, as well as a few outposts. The NPCs provide both an upgrade items coupon and a chance to obtain an entirely new recipe. The upgrade discount increases as more items are upgraded. It can be increased if players complete certain achievements or quests.

Unlike Cromwell in Baldur's Gate II, there is no item level upgrade upgrader available in the beginning of Icewind Dale. Instead the NPCs that can be used to upgrade require several methods, which is both an improvement but also a drawback.

In Season 3, the upgrade system has been tweaked a bit, with numerous new features added. After a player has earned an upgrade to a particular level of an item for a specific armor slot, upgrading other items to the same level will cost less, even when they are part of an entirely different set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones needed to upgrade is reduced and the discount is affixed to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests needed to upgrade is also reduced and is not available until players reach certain achievement milestones.

Crests

When upgrading equipment in WoW players have a variety of options. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone who wants to upgrade. Crests are more special and are utilized during specific item level upgrades. Crests are a key element of the Dragonflight gear progression system introduced in 10.1 and are available in 4 ranks.

First, you must be aware that Crests are only available to equipment of a certain rank. Each rank has an upgrade path that is different. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade is 15 crests. The most complicated upgrade requires up to 20 crests, depending on the type of gear that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by completing content of the appropriate level, which involves walking around and engaging in outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, raids or dungeons with all difficulties for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses for gear that is used in the endgame. The crests can then be exchanged with an upgrader, such as Cuzolth or Item Level upgrade Vaskarn, in Valdrakken to upgrade the item in the proper steps and pathways.

The new currency system isn't difficult to use, but it brings some changes to the process of upgrading. For instance, when an item upgrades is at the highest level of upgrade for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change allows players to upgrade their gear to the highest possible level for all their characters rather than relying on seasonal loot.

It's also important to use crests wisely, as they are only used for one purpose. It is recommended to use your Whelpling-rank crests on the top-quality equipment you can find and keep Drake and Wyrm Crests for the next round of upgrades. This is especially true for items such as rings and trinkets that occupy multiple slots. The discount for the entire account is only applicable when all slots on the character are filled with high-quality gear.
