Items can be upgraded at any item upgrader NPC in the game. Generally these NPCs are found in capital cities or major questing spots. Players can also locate item upgraders when they visit dungeons with high-level bosses and by talking to NPCs in their faction's garrisons.

The World of Warcraft item upgrade system allows players to increase the level of their weapons, armor, and trinkets. This process is largely identical to the process used for gear reforging in Mists of Pandaria and Warlords of Draenor however instead of using the currency appropriate to the task players must visit an item upgrader NPC to complete the process.

Upgrades can be costly particularly for weapons and armor. Based on the upgrade path each step up in level of the item could cost several Valorstones and crests. The costs can be prohibitive for those who do not have the money, or are unwilling to grind.

The game lets you play a reroll of an upgraded item using a specific tool from the menu of items. The highest level of upgrade an item can achieve is determined by its tier and the quality. Rare and Epic items can be upgraded to levels of nine, whereas common items can only be upgraded up to level six. Item upgrades are added to the item's base statistics which means that they will no longer increase after a specific point.
