There are models that can mop and charge themselves, a feature that may be important for people with pets or children. Many of the top performers in our tests also have decent obstacle avoidance.

1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO

The i3+ EVO is identical to its sibling, the i3 EVO. They differ only in the fact that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. That makes the i3+ a good option for those who want an entirely automated, hands-free cleaning experience but don't mind manually emptying their robot's dustbin when it fills up.

Both robots are good in removing dirt and dust particles on floors and carpets and can maneuver around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software creates a smart map of your home to aid the i3+ in its navigation and clean up efficiently. The i3+ does not have the same obstacle avoidance capabilities as the i7+ or any other top-rated robots we test. It may be stuck on power cords and socks, and may have trouble navigating between different surfaces like carpet and hardwood.

iRobot suggests cleaning the area around the i3+ EVO vacuums before using it. This includes putting away any toys or other clutter it may encounter. Also, keep the dustbin and filter clean to prevent them from getting blocked. When the i3+ EVO’s internal bin is empty or the battery is not fully charged, it returns to the docking station and automatically takes the dirt out of the docking station’s external dustbin. Then it continues cleaning where it left off. The battery's life span is approximately an hour-and-a-half of continuous usage. It takes about three hours to fully charge.

2. IRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the top model in the iRobot flagship line, and it comes with all the latest features. It's self-charging, self-navigating and -- the most important feature of all -- it has a self-emptying dustbin that eliminates one of the most important sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.

The Roomba i7+ can keep up to 10 floor plans and their names thanks to Imprint Smart Mapping, which lets it identify rooms to clean them more efficiently. It also works with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning jobs and control your robot using voice or through the app.

In our testing, the i7+ was quicker and more maneuverable than our second-placed model and the eufy RoboVac G30, and it removed large chunks of pet hair from all surfaces kinds, including carpeting. The biggest advantage over the Eufy is its self-emptying garbage bin, which eliminates major sources of maintenance and lowers the cost of recurring maintenance.

We were also impressed with the i7+’s compatibility with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We used these services to instruct the robot on how to begin, stop, or pause cleaning sessions as well as move around the room, and to vacuum a particular area. The iRobot Home App made it easy to connect the i7+ to these services. We were able, once connected, to give voice commands to the i7+ for example "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options for managing the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is an athletic car in a sea of cordless vacuums that feel like minivans and buses. It has the power and features to replace a stand-up vacuum for the majority of households and can fit nicely on the table for a coffee or the bookshelf, where you can move it around like the magic wand.

The V10 is powered with a 7-cell energy-dense Lithium-ion battery that produces power without fading for 60 minutes. Its advanced whole-machine filter system removes allergens, and then releases clean air back into your home. Its cleaning head is specially designed and drives stiff nylon bristles deep into carpet to suck up large particles and fine dust. It comes with three suction settings to meet the task at hand. It swiftly switches from floor vac to handheld vacuum, and then back to floor.

The model comes with a dock that can charge the Dyson to 100 percent in 3.5 hours. It also offers an easy access to two attachments and a wand. This is a significant improvement over older Dysons models, which require a lengthy charge and are difficult to store.

The main drawback of the V10 is its sluggish run time. Its marketing claims that it can last up to 60 minutes of running time are not true as CR's tests show. This is an average and not a remarkable run time for a battery-powered cordless vac. It's enough time to automatic vacuum the average-sized home but not enough to get into every corner. (A second pass is usually sufficient). That's not to say this model isn't a good choice: It's lighter and agile than older cordless Dysons, and its vacuuming performance is noticeably better on low-pile carpet.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

One of iRobot's most adored robot vacuums, the 694 is an entry-level model that's a good choice for people who don't want to spend too much money on a robot. It was able to remove most types of debris and sizes in our tests, and frequently went over the same area several times to ensure an efficient clean. Its flat front allows it to reach the corners and edges of walls.

Its smart navigation system uses iAdapt technology to avoid obstacles and guide you through your home. However, it isn't equipped with the capabilities for mapping of more advanced models, like our top picks, i3+EVO and J7+ Series. It is prone to getting stuck on phone cords or low furniture and will often run out of power before returning to its base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways to the Roomba 694 because it has fewer parts that require regular cleaning, is outfitted with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtering system, has a lower costs for recurring expenses and is more sophisticated in its automation capabilities and is better able to maneuver itself. It also has a bigger dustbin and is charged faster.

The eufy RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 for most purposes, because it has a better battery life, has the ability to alter the suction power mode by hand, comes with physical boundary strips, and can be controlled by your smartphone's voice assistant. It is also more robust, has a more powerful motor, and can perform better on low-pile and bare floors.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a well-known brand in the field of home electronics. It's not a surprise, then, that they are one of the top rated robot vacuum makers of robot vacuums and mop. Their Jet Bot AI+ is equipped with cutting-edge onboard technology for navigation and obstacles avoidance.

The app offers a wide range of customization options for your robotic cleaner. This includes mopping levels, virtual barriers and behavior adjustments docking frequency settings, and more. The app is simple to navigate and use as are other Samsung devices.

In our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ performed well on hard floors, and it removed 86 percent of dog hair (on carpet). However, it didn't do particularly well in avoiding higher-up objects like cords or socks, which was disappointing. It's also a bit more expensive than some of the other models we've tested which could be a deal-breaker for some buyers.

The app allows you to access the onboard camera of the smart vacuum. You can also create live streaming from the robot's cleaning zone. This feature allows you to monitor your children or pets while you're away. The dustbin and filter are washable for quick, easy cleanup. The Jet Bot AI+ also comes with a clean station that self-empties to keep the robot's trash bin clean and optimizes its suction power for each cleaning run.

However the HRV 425BL continued to move across the border, but it didn't register it as an incline. Also, the ability to create weekly cleaning schedules is a great time-saving convenience.
