Bedside cots, also referred as bassinets and co-sleepers, are designed to let parents sleep close to their children at night without the risk of SIDS. However, they are only recommended for use up to 6 months when your baby is required to be moved into a cot or moses basket.

Height

Choose a model that allows you to lower one side at the press of a button, so you can easily lift your baby up without having to get out of bed. This is crucial, particularly as your child grows and becomes more mobile. Do not add anything that may increase the risk of suffocation or injury, like duvets and pillows, which can cause your baby to become overheated.

The NPR of the CPSC NPR includes 24 incidents that are attributed to product-related issues that include gaps between the bedside sleeper (adult bed) and the bedside sleeper (12 incidents), fabric-sided enclosed openings (11) and consumer misassembly (6 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC examined the possibility of adding additional requirements to bedside co sleeper cot sleepers. For example they would need to meet the minimum side height requirements for bassinets, or at a minimum, the maximum height requirements for the rails that are lowered. The CPSC determined, however, that these requirements were not practical or effective in reducing amount of instances where infants are trapped between the bedside baby sleeper rail as well as an adult bed.

Many of the reported incidents in the NPR included multi-use twin bedside cot sleepers that could be converted into other modes such as bassinets and play yards. Many commenters suggested that the CPSC include a different option to the proposed rule for bedside sleepers that are multi-use that would permit them to meet minimum side height requirements for bassinets by using a removable attachment. The attachment can be permanently attached or removed when the item is not being used as a bassinet for babies.

The CPSC is reviewing these comments as well as other submissions received in response to the NPR on sleep at night. The Commission will be examining these comments when deciding on the final rule which is expected to be issued in the month of November 2021.
