A robot vacuum will keep floors clean enough to reduce the frequency with which you'll need to manually vacuum. Choose a robot vacuum with good navigation, is able to clean corners and stairs and has an enormous bin that needs to be emptied periodically.

There are also models that clean and charge themselves which can be important for people with pets or kids. Many of the top performers in our tests have good obstacle avoidance.

1. Roomba iRobot i3+ from iRobot EVO

The i3+ EVO is similar to its sibling i3 EVO. They differ only in that the i3+ comes with self-emptying capabilities. This makes the i3+ a good choice for people who want an automated, hands-free cleaning experience but don't mind having to empty their dust bin manually as it gets full.

Both robots are proficient in removing dirt and dust particles on hard floors and carpets and are able to maneuver around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software makes a smart maps of your home to help the i3+ navigate and clean efficiently. The i3+ does not feature obstacle avoidance features like the i7+ or other top-rated robots we test. It can get stuck on power cords and socks and have trouble moving between different surfaces like rug and hardwood.

iRobot recommends that you tidy up the area where the i3+ EVO vacuums before using it. This includes getting rid of any toys or other items it might come across. It's also recommended to keep the dust bin and filter clear so they aren't clogged by dirt. If the i3+ EVO's internal bin is filled or the battery is depleted it will return to its docking station and automatically empties its debris into the station's external dustbin and then resumes cleaning the area where it started. The i3+ EVO's battery lasts for about an hour and a half of continuous use, and takes about three hours to recharge.

2. iRobot Roomba i7+

The iRobot Roomba i7+ is the top model in the iRobot flagship line, and it is equipped with the most recent features. It's self-charging, self-navigating and -- the most important feature of all -- it has self-emptying bins that eliminate one of the most important sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.

The Roomba i7+ can remember up to 10 floor plans and their names with Imprint Smart Mapping, a system that allows it to identify rooms to clean them more efficiently. It also works with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning tasks and control your bagless robot vacuum using voice or via the app.

In our tests the i7+ was faster and more maneuverable than our top choice which was the eufy RoboVac G30, and it removed large chunks of pet hair from all surface kinds including carpeting. Its main advantage over the eufy, though, is its self-emptying dustbin that eliminates a major source of maintenance and cuts down on recurring costs.

We were also impressed with the i7+’s compatibility with Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant AI services. We utilized these services to instruct the robot to begin, stop, or pause cleaning sessions, as well as to move around the room, and even vacuum a specific area. Connecting the i7+ to these services was easy and straightforward using the iRobot Home app. When connected we were able to give the i7+ voice commands, such as "Hey Alexa, vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options for managing the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

This tiny Dyson model is an athletic car that is amidst a sea of vacuums with cords that feel like minivans and buses. It has the power and features to replace a stand-up vacuum for most households and can fit nicely on the coffee table or shelves where you can move it around like a magic device.

The V10 is powered by a Lithium-ion battery with 7 cells of energy that produces power that is not fading for 60 minutes. The advanced whole-machine filtering system captures allergens, and then releases cleaner air into your home. Its specialized cleaning head drives bristles made of nylon that are stiff into carpet to collect large particles and fine dust. It comes with three suction modes that can be adjusted to suit the task. It can quickly change between handheld and Automatic Floor Cleaning Machine vacuum, and vice versa.

This model has a dock which charges the Dyson to 100% within 3.5 hours. It also offers an easy access to two attachments and a Wand. This is a huge improvement over earlier Dysons that require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The V10's biggest drawback is its limited run time. Its claims on the market that it can provide up to 60 minutes of running time are not true, as CR's testing shows. This is a typical battery-powered vacuum's run time. This is enough time to clean the typical home but not enough to reach every area. (A second pass usually works). This model has its own advantages, however: it's lighter and more mobile than previous Dysons cordless models, and its vacuuming ability is noticeable superior for carpet floors with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694

The 694 is a basic robot vacuum that's an excellent choice for those who don't have lots of money to invest in the latest model of robot. It was able to remove all kinds of debris in our testing and often went over the same area many times to give a thorough clean. The flat front of the unit allows it to reach into corners and along the walls' edges, which is a nice addition.

Its navigation system is smart and uses iAdapt technology to stay clear of obstacles and navigate your home. However, it isn't equipped with the ability to map that is found in more advanced models, such as our top picks, i3+EVO and J7+ Series. Because of this, it may get stuck on things like phone cords or furniture that isn't in good condition, and often runs out of battery power before making it back to its home base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot is superior in many ways over the Roomba 694, as it has fewer parts that require regular cleaning, is equipped with an allergen-trapping HEPA filtering system, incurs lower costs for recurring expenses and has more advanced automation capabilities and is able to better navigate its own. It also has a larger dustbin and charges quicker.

The elegant RoboVac X8 is superior to the Roomba 694 for a variety of purposes, as it has a better battery life, the ability to change its suction power mode on its own, comes with physical boundary strips, and is controlled by your smartphone's voice assistant. It's also more robust, has a more powerful motor, automatic floor cleaning Machine and can perform better on floors with bare or low-pile.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a household name in the field of home electronics. It's not surprising that they are also among the top manufacturers of robot vacuums and mop. Their Jet Bot AI+ is equipped with cutting-edge onboard tech for navigation and obstacle avoidance.

The app provides a range of options to customize your robotic vacuum cleaner sale cleaner. These include virtual barriers, mopping levels and behavior modifications, docking frequency settings and much more. It's simple to comprehend and is user-friendly, which is the case with other Samsung devices.

In our tests of the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and dealt with dog hair (on carpet) very well, picking up 86 percent of it. However, it wasn't particularly well in avoiding taller objects like cords and socks, which was disappointing. It's also more expensive than other models we've tested, and this could be a deal breaker for some shoppers.

The smart vacuum has an onboard camera that can be accessed through the app. You can also set up a live stream from the robot's cleaning station. It also has a smart app that lets you view the virtual map and manage functions and schedules. Additionally, you can track the vacuum's battery status and then return it to its dock to charge by pressing the button. The app allows you to customize the lights on top of the vacuum using different colors, so that you can clearly see which areas it's focused on or where it's got stuck.

The application also allows you to manually steer the robot should you need to. For instance, my living room rug has a darkly colored border that can trip up some of the other robots I've tried. However, the HRV 425BL continued to move across the border, without registering it as a cliff. The ability to program a automatic cleaning robot schedule for each week is a time-saving benefit.
