Lolita's Personality

Lolita's Care

For years, activists have been pleading for the release of Lolita from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her were hopeful that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to return to the ocean.

Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her at risk. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also put her in a tank that is one-and-a-half times smaller her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, promised to work on a plan with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her to eventually open water. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could spend the remainder of her life and receive human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of times larger than her Miami house and was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita, who has lived in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a secluded area for over 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have called for Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry, who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

While her beauty is undeniable Lolita's health continues deteriorate. She has been a source of concern for animal welfare groups who wish to see her returned into the wild. Lolita is a resident at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970 was a popular tourist attraction there for decades. She has suffered from chronic illnesses and a crippling infection that has left her in a fragile condition.

The Dolphin Company, which now is the owner of the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information about Lolita's condition. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These show that she is aging rapidly and her health is declining.

It is not clear what health issues are plaguing the orca, since her captor isn't obliged to disclose this information. However, a database of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is a major factor in the deaths of orcas in captivity.

Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita many are hopeful that she may be closer than ever before to living a wild life. The new owner of the Seaquarium has pledged to move the whale out of her tank and into her home waters in the Pacific.

The decision comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean and perhaps even be reunited with the orca believed to be her mother. Sadly the plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who died on Friday from what was believed to be a renal problem.
