CBT Motorcycle Course For Novice Riders

If you're older than 17 years old, an A1 licence allows you to take off your L plates and ride a scooter or small motorcycle and carry a pillion rider.

Compulsory Basic Training (CBT)

The CBT is a required course for all riders who are new to the sport. It typically takes a full day to complete and if you reach a satisfactory standard at the end of the course your instructor will present you with a certificate of completion that is known as a DL196.

During this course, you will learn how to operate a motorcycle. You will be guided by a knowledgeable instructor throughout the course of the day. You will also be given an hour of theory to teach you the road code, the rules of the road, and safe way of lane positioning. You'll learn how to inspect and maintain your bike, and also how to carry a pillion passenger (if necessary).

The next part of the CBT involves practical riding on the spot. Your instructor will designate an area that is safe for you to practice your skills, beginning with a slow pace and then working on basic safety checks, moving away and stopping the motorcycle and braking safely. During this time, your instructor will be in radio contact with you and will assist until they are confident that you are able to perform these exercises at a safe level.

In this part of the training you'll be introduced to different kinds of roads and traffic conditions. You'll be taught how to safely deal with roundabouts and traffic lights and also how to navigate one-way streets. Licensing

This course is for those who have completed Module 1 & 2 and wish to enhance their riding abilities and build a relationship with their bike. It usually involves more advanced exercises and training such as looking through your turns and leaning to steer the bike at higher speeds.
