He also was able to communicate with other animals by using sign language, and he had a good grasp of grammar. He used a training method called "rival model" which involved two trainers showing the bird what they were trying to teach it. The trainers would change their positions frequently so that the bird could be in a position to interact with them both and receive rewards and attention from each of them.

After the success of Free Solo, Alex was given the title of National Hero by President Barack Obama in 2014. He was able to accomplish many things throughout his life because of his strength of character and his desire to live life to his own terms.
