There are models that can mop and charge on their own, a feature that may be important for people with children or pets. Many of the best performers in our tests have good obstacles to avoid.

1. iRobot Roomba i3+ EVO

The i3+ EVO and Top rated robot Vacuum its sibling the i3 EVO are the same robots, but they differ in that the i3+ has self-emptying capabilities. The i3+ is an excellent option for those who want a fully automated, hands-off cleaning experience, but are willing to manually empty the dust bin after it has filled up.

Both robots are adept at removing surface dirt on floors and carpets and are able to maneuver around furniture and other obstacles. iAdapt navigation software makes smart maps of your home that help the i3+ EVO navigate and clean in a way that maximizes efficiency. However, unlike the i7+ and other top rated robots we tested the i3+ does not have a feature for avoiding obstacles and therefore it could be stuck on things like power cords or socks, and it can have difficulty traversing transitions across surfaces like from hardwood to rug.

iRobot suggests that you clean up the area where the i3+ EVO vacuums prior to using it. This includes putting away any toys or other items it might come across. You should also keep the filters and dust bin clear to avoid becoming clogged. If the i3+ EVO's internal bin is filled or the battery is depleted, it returns to its docking station and automatically empties its trash into the station's external dustbin and continues cleaning the area where it left off. The i3+ EVO's battery lasts for about an hour and a half of continuous use, and takes around three hours to fully recharge.

2. iRobot i7+ Roomba

The iRobot i7+ is the top Rated robot vacuum model in iRobot's flagship line and comes with the latest features. It's self-charging, self-navigating, and the most important feature of all -- it has a self-emptying dustbin that eliminates one of the primary sources of maintenance for any robot vacuum.

The Roomba I7+ is able to map rooms more efficiently with Imprint Smart Mapping. It also integrates with the iRobot Home app to let you schedule cleaning tasks and control your robot with voice or via the app.

In our testing, the i7+ was faster and more maneuverable than our second-placed model, the eufy RoboVac G30, and it took large pieces of pet hair from all surfaces types including carpeting. Its main advantage over the eufy it self-empties its dust bin that eliminates a major cause of maintenance and lowers recurring costs.

We were also awestruck by the i7+'s compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant AI services which we used to instruct the robot to begin, stop or pause its cleaning session and move around the room and vacuum an area. Connecting the i7+ to these services was easy and straightforward through the iRobot Home app. Once connected, to speak commands to the i7+ such as "Hey Alexa vacuum the master bedroom." The iRobot Home app also provides options for managing the i7+'s settings and monitoring its performance.

3. Dyson Cyclone V10

In a world full of vacuums with cords that are like minivans and Top rated Robot vacuum buses, this tiny Dyson model feels like an automobile. It's got the power and features to replace a stand-up vacuum for the majority of households and can fit perfectly next to a coffee table or on the bookshelf, where you can move it around like a magic wand.

The V10 is powered by a 7-cell energy-dense Lithium-ion battery that produces power without fading for 60 minutes. The sophisticated whole-machine filter system captures allergens, and then releases cleaner air into your home. Its cleaning head is specially designed and drives stiff nylon bristles deep into carpet to suck up large dust and crumbs. It has three suction modes that can be adapted to the specific task. It is able to quickly change from automatic floor cleaning machine vacuum to handheld vacuum and vice versa.

The model comes with a dock that can charge the Dyson to 100% within 3.5 hours. It also gives easy access to 2 attachments as well as an handheld. This is a major improvement over previous Dysons which require a long charge and are difficult to store.

The V10's main drawback is its short running time. Its claims on the market that it can last up to 60 minutes of run time are not true as CR's tests have shown. This is an average, not an exceptional, time for an electric cordless vacuum powered by batteries. That's still enough run time to clean most of an average-sized house but not long enough to cover every area (though the second time around usually does the trick). This model has its own advantages however: it's lighter and more mobile than previous Dysons cordless models, and its vacuuming ability is noticeably superior on carpets with low pile.

4. iRobot Roomba 694"

One of iRobot's most adored robot vacuum cleaner cheap vacuums, the 694 is an entry-level model that's a great option for those who don't want to spend too much money on a robot. It's capable of sucking up all types of debris and sizes during our tests, and often passes over the same areas several times to ensure a thorough clean. Its flat front end helps to get into corners and along the edges of walls, which is a nice addition.

Its intelligent navigation system makes use of iAdapt technology to steer clear of obstacles and help you navigate your home. However, it isn't equipped with the ability to map that is found in more advanced models, including our top picks, i3+EVO and J7+ Series. This means that it is sometimes stuck on things like phone cords or low furniture, and it often will run out of battery before making it back to its base.

The Xiaomi Mi robot vacuum is superior to the Roomba 694 in many ways in that it has fewer components that require regular maintenance, is fitted with an allergen-trapping HEPA filter, has lower recurring costs, has more advanced automation capabilities and does a better job moving itself. It also has a bigger dustbin, and charges more quickly.

The eufy RoboVac X8 has a superior battery life than the Roomba 694. It also comes with physical boundaries and can be controlled using your smartphone's voice assistant. It also feels more sturdy and has a more powerful motor, and is able to perform better on both bare floors and carpets with low pile, while providing a greater variety of automation options.

5. Samsung Jet Bot AI+

Samsung is a well-known brand in the field of home electronics. It's not surprising that they are also among the top manufacturers of robot vac vacuums and mop. Jet Bot AI+ has the most advanced onboard technology to navigate and avoid obstacles.

The app offers a wide range of options to customize your robotic hoovers cleaner. These include mopping levels, virtual barriers and behavior modifications, docking frequency settings and many more. It's easy to understand and user-friendly, as is the case with other Samsung devices.

In our testing our tests, the Jet Bot AI+ excelled on hard floors and dealt with dog hair (on carpet) very well, picking up 86 percent of it. However, it wasn't particularly well with taller objects like cords and socks which was a disappointment. It's also more expensive than other models we've tested and this could be a deterrent for some shoppers.

The smart vacuum comes with an onboard camera that you can access through the app. You can also create a live stream from the robot's cleaning station. This feature allows you to monitor your children or pets while you're away. The filter and the dustbin can be washed for the quick and easy cleaning. The Jet Bot AI+ also has a clean station that's self-emptying, which helps keep the robot's dustbin clear and optimizes its suction power for each cleaning run.

6. Black & Decker Robot Vacuum

Black and Decker robots are designed specifically for flooring made of hard wood. The robots come with an extra wide cleaning path, and dust bins that are 2X bigger than the competitors. This lets them clean the area for longer. Plus, they include two side sweepers to clean around edges and corners. The POWERSERIES Extreme model also comes with AutoSense technology, which detects if it's picking up surface litter or embedded dirt and automatically adjusts its power level. It also has a smart app that lets you see the virtual map and control the functions and schedules. Additionally, you can track the status of the vacuum's battery and return it to its dock to charge at the touch of one button. The app lets you customize the LED lights on the top of the vacuum to tell where it is focused or if it's stuck.

The app also makes it simple to steer the budget robot vacuum manually should you need to. For instance, my living room rug has a darkly-colored border that tends to cause confusion for other robots I've tested. However, the HRV 425BL kept moving across the border without registering it as a cliff. The ability to program a weekly cleaning schedule for each week is a time-saving advantage.
