Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, bought Alex in 1977 from a pet store in the Northwest Side. She began an ongoing study for 30 years that would change our perception of the intelligence of birds. He was able to understand analogies and recognize written words, but did not seem to be able to connect them with their spoken language.

Parrots are the majority of birds that learn to speak, but they don't comprehend their meaning. To teach Alex, Pepperberg and her assistants would enact scenarios involving the object they wanted him to know about. This method is known as the rival model, and it has since become a common method of teaching animals.

In addition to his cognitive skills, Alex was a friendly and playful dog who loved to play with his owners. He often acted as an adviser and cheerleader during training sessions, urging or encouraging them to do better. He was also very attentive and was able to sense the emotions of his human companions. He often jumped into the arms of his owner when she was happy, and was a clinging to her legs when she was sad or upset.

He was successful in overcoming all these challenges with his determination and perseverance. He never gave up on his goal of becoming a successful mountain climber. He pushed on towards his goal and eventually became one of the most well-known mountain climbers in the world.

Even after his passing, he continues to inspire people across the world. The film Free Solo is a documentary about Alex's life and his incredible climbing achievements. The film has received a lot of critical acclaim, and is regarded as one of the best documentaries of all time. It has also won many awards, including the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2019.
