Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary

Bentley's bespoke coachbuilding division, Mulliner, has designed a unique key case to celebrate the brand's centenary. Made from Dark Stained Burr Walnut and Piano Black veneer, it includes a flying "B" paperweight, a set of keys as well as a brochure with never-before-seen 1930 8 Litre imagery.

Aesthetics

The Continental GT is Bentley's most sophisticated open-top car. Its rear tonneau, for instance, featured the largest piece of dark-stained, book-matched Burr Walnut veneer ever applied to an actual production Bentley. Similarly, the electrically-operated glass sunroof and champagne cooler that incorporated hand-blown and hand-cut lead crystal bottles marked a new benchmark in luxury and innovation.

Bentley is the most sought-after automobile brand in the world due to its bespoke design and craftsmanship. The company continues to push the boundaries with the latest technologies and hand-crafted products. This includes the introduction of an electronic tilt-opening rear window sunroof, as well as a custom-designed Apple iPad docking station.

Bentley celebrated its 100th anniversary this year, 100 years after it was established. Design

A custom Bentley key case is also included in the Centenary Specification, making the Bentley experience all-inclusive.

Function

The Bentley Mulsanne key has an opening button for the trunk and a second button that starts the car. The key also has a button to turn on the parking brake. There is a knob to fold and unfold the mirrors when parking in tight spots. This feature can assist you in getting into and out of the car more quickly.

Each key takes about two days to create. The key is cut by hand, shaped by hand, stitched, sealed, and then polished to give a superior result. It is light and compact and will fit the Bentley key perfectly. Its design is similar with the Volkswagen Phaeton's big car key, but feels more heavy and premium.

It also comes with Secure-A-Key which can help prevent theft of keys that are keyless. This device is inserted into the remote control fob and then shuts it off when the key isn't utilized for a period of a few minutes. It prevents thieves from transmitting the key's frequency to other devices which can unlock and start the car.

Personalisation

Bentley's Mulliner division lets customers design their own vehicle. The "mood station" lets customers pick images that inspire them. They can range from stunning views to sporting events. The guests are given a key case made by hand that houses the R.F.I.D. enabled key cards. The keys can also be fitted with Bentley Muliner Personalised Welcome Lamps that illuminate the door's opening pathway with the owner's name and/or emblem as they are approaching the vehicle.

Bentley estimates that it takes about 500 man-hours to construct and assemble a Mulsanne. The key to this time-consuming effort is a reluctance to adopt the latest technology. Instead of employing a machine for spacers to the perfectly matched leather seats, workers at the Crewe factory do it by hand. Drivers are required to park their vehicles manually, rather than relying on sensors built into the vehicle to guide them into perpendicular and paralell spots.

At the event, Bentley displayed its Mulliner personalization options with an exclusive example that was the Mulsanne W.O. Edition, which pays tribute to the man who founded the company, William Osler Bentley. The limited-edition cars come with an exclusive key that shows a portion of the 1930 8 Liter's crankshaft.
