BMW Ghost Immobiliser

The Ghost uses the CAN data bus for communication with your vehicle. This prevents thieves from putting in an additional key or replacing the ECU to bypass your security system as it requires a correct PIN code to start the engine.

Like other immobilisers, unlike other immobilisers, the Ghost doesn't use LED indications or key fobs. It makes use of the buttons on your vehicle to allow you enter a unique disarming sequence that only you know.

Stop & Start

It is connected to the BMW CAN data network and is programmed with an unique PIN code that is accessible via buttons in your car. This lets you enter a specific key push sequence that isn't found available in the usual media menus, such as volume up/down, source, cruise control or air conditioning on that prevents your car from starting until it is entered. The PIN can range between 4 and 20 digits which makes it extremely difficult for thieves to guess or break.

We can also add to the system a service/valet mode. This mode is activated when your car is being serviced so that the Ghost is hidden from the garage. You can activate this by pressing the service button five times on your infotainment unit (the system will flash with confirmation) and the Ghost will automatically rearm when you return.

Ghost developed this discreet, unobtrusive device to combat the growing sophistication of hi-tech thieves. It is designed to prevent thieves from acquiring a new key or replacing the ECU in order to start your vehicle and then drive away. Ghost is connected to your CAN network and uses buttons on your vehicle to generate an individual push-sequence that has to be entered before your engine can be started.

This will activate the anti-hijack mode and, once activated, any attempt to start the engine will be blocked. When the system determines that the vehicle is no longer moving, it will honk the horn and flash the indicators. If it is unable to find the correct code it will also stall the engine (where it is). By entering your push sequence, or entering service mode, you can cancel the Anti-Hijack feature. This allows your vehicle to temporarily start without the need to enter a PIN.

If you have an GPS device connected to your BMW it could be used to turn off the Anti-Hijack feature so you can still use the navigation system in your car when the vehicle is parked and not being watched. You can also use your smart-phone to control the anti-theft feature as well as other functions.

The Ghost can be positioned under the dashboard, or in the centre console. It is completely hidden and tamper-proof. It does not require any additional wiring. The device is connected to the vehicle's CAN Data Network (similar to an Ethernet cable) and a personalised PIN code is programmed into it. The pin code has to be selected prior to the vehicle's start. This stops thieves from using a copied key or replacing the ECU in order to bypass this system.

If your vehicle is taken away, the Ghost will go into service mode and disable all functions until you have the PIN code or the mobile application to disable it. Ghost can also stop 'Relay-style Frequency Amplification'. This is the most popular method of stealing a car with a keyfob which has been duplicated or stolen through hacking. Ghost can help you avoid this by installing an anti-theft device within your vehicle that is called Secure-A Key. The device is installed in the key fob of your car and shuts off its battery after a few inactive minutes. This is possible with the majority of modern PKE keys.
