The Lamborghini Sian FKP 37 is a Supercapacitor Hybrid

The Sian FKP 37, by Lamborghini's standards is a wild automobile. It's also one of the first hybrid production cars to utilize supercapacitors.

A 34-hp electronic motor integrated into the automatic manual transmission powers the Sian for speeds up to 80 mph when the V-12 takes over. This system allows the car to accelerate immediately and is more efficient.

Forged Composites

The Sian's hybrid system has an additional feature in its sleeve it's Supercapacitors. It recharges faster than lithium ion batteries, and the car is able to run for up to 63 second using electric power.

Lamborghini's forged composites are the most important factor in bringing this to fruition The material could eventually be used in regular production vehicles. It starts as a sheet of uncured plastic, which is then mixed with random lengths of carbon fiber strands. It's not as gorgeous as carbon fiber sheets that are pre-impregnated. However, it's lighter and more durable.

To bring the forged carbon fiber into shape, the operators simply cut off the appropriate amount of mass, put it in a hot press mold and squeeze it under heat. It only takes minutes, while it can take hours to make the same part with traditional methods.

It's not certain if we'll ever see structurally forged composite parts in production cars, but Lamborghini says its manufacturing friendliness means that the material could eventually be used in more affordable products. The cost of materials and labor is high enough however, if you could increase the production process, you could save money. Forged composite is also more flexible than woven carbon fiber and engineers can make complicated shapes without astronomical costs or weight.

Carbon Skin

The Lamborghini Sian is a sleek roadster with a futuristic design that maximizes aerodynamic efficiency. Its long, sculptured contours and distinctive aero wings make a striking profile and its low front and integrated carbon fiber splitter help to improve stability. Comparing to a typical lithium-ion battery Sian's supercapacitor is three times more powerful and is able to be charged in just 64 seconds. It is also lighter and smaller. The supercapacitor is located in the bulkhead that separates the engine compartment from the cabin, is powered by a motor of 34 horsepower that is located at the rear of the automatic transmission.

The Lamborghini Sian is based on the Aventador SVJ, which means it has the same V12 engine as that model. It shares a similar suspension and chassis and the same four-wheel drive. But the Sian's unique hybrid powertrain is its biggest selling factor.

Ad Personam

The Sian is Lamborghini's debut hybrid car and it's an impressive declaration of intent. The latest creation of the raging bull makes use of supercapacitor technology to reduce its power-to weight ratio without reducing its incredibly powerful V-12 engine.

The name Sian is the Bolognese word for lightning, and it's an acknowledgment of Lamborghini's past and future. The alphanumeric suffix of FKP37 honors Ferdinand Karl Piech. He was the man who brought Lamborghini to the Volkswagen Group and died just before the debut of Sian. Only 63 cars were built and they're all sold out.

Specs

The Sian is built on the Aventador SVJ, so it features the same V12 engine as well as the same suspension and chassis. It also adds a smaller electric motor to turn it into a hybrid. It can be powered by electric energy only at lower speeds, and utilize gasoline engines to accelerate when required.

The electric motor is powered by a supercapacitor that is located in the bulkhead, between the cabin and the engine compartment. The exterior is a mix of carbon fiber and orange paint and the roof is adorned with a glass section inspired by the Periscopio found on early Countach protoypes. Other highlights include aluminum accents painted in Oro Electrum, which is the color Lamborghini uses to distinguish its hybrid cars.

Inside the Sian has a cockpit that was designed by Lamborghini's chief of design, Mitja Borkert. The car is a little wilder than normal for lamborghini key fob with its many creases and cuts.
