Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, bought Alex in 1977 from a pet store on the Northwest Side. She began a 30-year study that would change our perception of the intelligence of avian species. Her research with Alex challenged the notion that birds could only imitate human language without understanding the meaning.

He also had a habit of drinking the milk that was spiked with drugs which he and his gang members used to strengthen themselves for their "ultraviolence."

Alex's past as a parrot at the pet shop was not remarkable but it served him well. Alex was quick to master words and concepts from his human trainer, Irene Pepperberg. Her research over thirty years on him revolutionized theories about animal cognition, communication, and interaction. She is grateful to Alex with teaching her how to apply the model that worked for animals as well as children with learning disabilities.

After her research with him, Dr. Pepperberg went on to study other parrots like Wart and Griffin. She is currently a professor at the University of Washington, where she continues her pioneering research with birds.

Alex is the youngest of the group, and also the most childlike. She's a bit of an obnoxious girl and has been described by others as being a bit teasing. He was also able to count up to six sets of objects and demonstrated math skills that were advanced at the time for birds.

He could also communicate with other animals via signs and had a solid understanding of grammar. He employed a method of training known as "rival model" which included two trainers who showed the bird what they wanted to teach it. The trainers would often switch positions so that the bird could interact with both trainers and receive attention from each.

After the success of Free Solo, Alex was awarded the status of National Hero by President Barack Obama in 2014. Alex was able to accomplish so much during his lifetime due to his strength of character, and his desire to live his life on his terms.
