Lolita’s Personality

Lolita's Care

For years activists have been lobbying for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's return to the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped that Lolita might suffer the same fate. Sadly, she did not get the chance to return to the ocean.

The captors of Lolita - the Dolphin Company - have ignored veterinary advice and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, overexerting her with high-speed circles and head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and weakening her immune system. Additionally, they put her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita a relative of theirs, pledged to come up with an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her to eventually open water. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could live for the rest of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the ocean itself and not a concrete tank.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could be alive. In the wild, killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die.
