When ANC is turned on, the Q30's 40mm drivers effectively block out most of the ambient noise and make for very pleasant listening. They have a natural sound signature that leans a little on the treble side, and some might feel is lacking in bass response (we got better results with the Bass Booster Equalizer preset). It is possible to fix this by using the Soundcore App, which comes with an eight-band Equalizer.

The XM5s have a lot of features that simplify the lives of the listener, and also automate tasks they would otherwise have to do manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme engine (which upscales compressed music to near hi-res) is also included and also support for Bluetooth's LDAC technology. This allows streaming of high-quality audio with rates that are higher than traditional Bluetooth. There's even a built-in microphone for making calls without hands.

The XM5 headphones aren't any different from the previous generation of WH headphones in terms of noise cancellation. They're among the most efficient headphones for cutting out constant drones heard in underground and train carriages. The XM5s are also great at separating listeners from the noises of airports and busy streets.

The sound quality is excellent. The XM5s aren't as detailed in the low frequencies as the XM4, however, there's a greater sense of clarity and transparency, too. The XM5s do not come with water resistant or dust resistant. In fact, Sony recommends that you don't sweat into them or wear them out in the rain. This might not be a problem for some people, but it could cause a problem for anyone who spend a lot of time in the gym or lives in a rainy city.

Apple AirPods Max

Apple AirPods Max is a pair of wireless headphones over-ear that feature Bluetooth technology and noise cancellation. Apple created dynamic drivers that measure 40mm with a neutral sound profile that emphasizes highs and mids without going overboard. They are perfect for movies and music. They also have better sound quality than many other headphones.

The headphones have a lightweight construction that is comfortable on the head. The ear cups, which are made of memory foam, are covered with woven fabric, are comfortable to wear over the ear and do not place pressure on the sides or forehead. The ear cups can also be flipped and rotated to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges provide a firm, but not too much clamping force to ensure that the ear cups stay in position during listening sessions.

The buttons are easy to use and well-placed but I would have liked to have an option to power off or switch off the headphones when in use. The headphones automatically go into standby mode after being removed from your ears or placed in their case, and they only come back on when you put them on your head once more.

Spatial audio is another cool feature. It utilizes accelerometers, gyroscopes and iPhones and iPads to determine where you're moving. Then, it adjusts the sound so that they appear to come from that particular location. This creates a theater-like experience with movies and videos made in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 or 7.1. Only iOS devices can be used to listen to the spatial audio.

The AirPods Max is a decent pair, but I'd be a bit disappointed when I spend $549 at an Apple Store knowing that the newer model would be better after a year. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and a better battery performance, so it's difficult to justify the cost for most people.
