The Lamborghini Sian FKP 37 is a Supercapacitor Hybrid

The Sian FKP 37, by Lamborghini's standards it's a wild car. It's one of the first hybrid vehicles to utilize supercapacitors.

A 34-hp electric motor that is integrated in the manual automatic transmission powers the Sian for speeds up to 80 mph, when the V-12 takes over. This system allows the car to accelerate immediately and is more efficient.

Forged Composites

The hybrid system of Sian comes with a trick in its sleeves that is a supercapacitor battery. It's able to recharge faster than lithium-ion batteries and the vehicle can be driven for up to 63 minutes using only electric power.

Lamborghini's forging composites are the main reason for this and the material could eventually make its way into regular production cars. It begins as a piece of uncured plastic, and then mixed with random lengths of carbon fiber strands. It's not as attractive as pre-woven sheets of carbon fiber, which are pre-impregnated with resin, but it's lighter and more rigid.

Operators cut the carbon fiber into the desired size, then place it in a hot press mould, and squeeze it with heat. It takes only a few minutes complete, whereas it may take several hours to make similar parts using traditional methods.

It's unclear if we'll ever see structural forged composite parts in production cars, but Lamborghini claims that its manufacturing pragmatism means that the material could eventually be integrated into cheaper products. The cost of materials and labor is quite high, but if you can expand the manufacturing process it can save money. Forged composite is also more flexible than woven carbon fiber and engineers can make intricate shapes without astronomical costs or weight.

The name Sian is an Bolognese word meaning lightning. It's a tribute to the brand's history and future.
