Bentley Mulsanne Key Celebrates Its Centenary

Mulliner Bentley's custom coachbuilding unit, has designed a distinctive keycase to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the brand. It is made of Dark Stained Burr Walnut and Piano Black veneer, it includes a flying "B" paperweight, a set of keys and a brochure that features never-before-seen 1930 8 Litre imagery.

Aesthetics

Bentley is a firm who takes its aesthetics seriously. This is evident in the precise positioning of its quilting, the use of leather from by-products of cattle, the wood from sustainably-managed forests, and the unique patterns of its levers. A car like the Continental GT W12 beckons as you approach it to show its sculptural beauty and power with carefully selected lighting.

The Continental GT is the most sophisticated open-top Bentley ever created. The rear tonneau of Continental GT, for example included the largest piece of dark-stained Burr Walnut veneer that was book-matched. Similarly, the electrically-operated glass sunroof and champagne cooler that incorporated hand-blown and hand-cut lead crystal bottles marked a new benchmark in luxury and innovation.

It is this bespoke design, quality and attention to detail that has established Bentley as the most sought-after automotive brand. Design

The key is made of vegetable tanned leather. It takes about two days to make each one. It is hand cut and shaped, then sewn, sealed and polished to provide the highest-quality finish. It is small and sturdy and matches the Bentley key perfectly. Its design is similar to that of the Volkswagen Phaeton large car's key however, it feels heavier and has a premium feel.

It is also equipped with Secure-A-Key that helps to prevent theft of keys with no key. This device is put into the remote control fob and then shuts it off when the key has not been utilized for a period of a few minutes. It blocks thieves from transmitting the key's frequency to other devices which can unlock and start the car.

Personalisation

Bentley's Mulliner division allows customers to design their car. The guests sit at a collection of images called "mood stations" and choose a selection of images ranging from scenic landscapes to sporting events that are inspiring to them to design their own. When each selection is made, a pattern appears that reveals the model and color preferences for the personalized Bentley.

The resulting configuration is then loaded onto individual R.F.I.D.-enabled keys which are handed out to guests in a custom-made key case. The keys can also be outfitted with Bentley Muliner Personalised Welcome Lamps which light the door's opening path with the owner's name and/or emblem when they are approaching the vehicle.

Bentley estimates that it takes around 500 man-hours to build and build a Mulsanne. The key to this time-consuming effort is a conscious refusal to adopt the latest technology. The Crewe factory workers don't employ a machine to place perfectly matched leather seats. Instead they do it by hand. Drivers must park their vehicles manually, not using sensors built-in to direct them to perpendicular and parallel spaces.

During the event, Bentley presented its Mulliner personalization capabilities by presenting one particular example - the Mulsanne W.O. The Mulsanne W.O. Edition pays homage to the founder William Osler Bentley. The limited edition cars are available in 100. the key with a special design that shows a portion of the 1930 8 Liter's crankshaft.
