You can set up the bot by plugging it into its base and connecting it to your home Wi Fi network. The Neato app will guide you through the initial configuration (linking the D4 to Wi-Fi, the name of it the D4 etc.). When the D4 is fully charged it's time to start a cleaning cycle.

Once you've got your D4 up and running it's possible to use the app to create an automatic schedule or manually start cleaning whenever you want. You can also control it with your voice through Google Home or Amazon Alexa. If you own an Apple Watch you can start a cleaning session by tapping your wrist.

In our lab tests, this model cleaned well on both hard and carpeted floors, picking up 91.3 percent of debris in serpentine paths. However it's not as efficient in corner and edge cleaning as the more expensive models. Its side sensors keep the D4 approximately 1.5 inches from walls. It also lacks the side-sweeping brush that is found on all but cheapest robotic cleaners. Furthermore, its raised turret means it can't fit under low-clearance furniture. It does, however, support virtual No-Go Lines, so you can draw lines on your floor plan to tell the D4 not to go there. The battery life of 75 minutes is comparable to other models, too. However, that's a minor sacrifice for the convenience this model offers.

2. Roomba 980 from iRobot

The Roomba 980 from iRobot is the flagship robot in the company's lineup with a promise of top performance and a host of connected features. The 980 retails at PS899/$899, though it's often cheaper if you shop on the internet (John Lewis or Amazon US are both good places to begin).

The 980 is the highest-tech of our top choices. It has a HEPA-filter that can capture micronized dust and allergens, which can improve the air quality in your home. It is also compatible with a range of flooring materials, including hardwoods and tiles.

The Roomba 980 also has the ability to automatically return to its base station once it's finished with its cleaning job, ensuring that it's always ready for the next adventure. This feature is exclusive to the 980, making the robot more user-friendly.

3. iRobot 985

iRobot Roomba 985 was designed by iRobot to help you make your floors cleaner and more attractive, thanks to its powerful cleaning, smart navigation, and smart integration with other iRobot products. Its exclusive dirt detection system alerts you to areas that require extra attention, and it comes with smart sensors that keep it away from steps and other potentially dangerous obstacles. It will also automatically recharge and continue cleaning until the job is done. Its intelligent mapping and vSLAM technology let it navigate through the entire level of your home, and keep track of the areas it's been to and what rooms it has yet to clean.

This makes it able to avoid wires and pet feces better than other robotic vacuums we've reviewed, such as the Roborock S6MaxV, EcovacsN8Pro and many more.

It's also iRobot's most powerful vacuum, capable of grabbing the dirtiest messes and larger pet hair, unlike other mid-range models such as the Roomba 960. This is due to the fact that the cleaner has larger brushes that rotate counter-clockwise, and a motor with greater suction power.

The Roomba 995 is iRobot’s least expensive vacuum that comes with recharge and resume. However, it does not have the auto-empty feature that the I6+ or I7 offer. It also lacks iAdapt 2.0 navigation and the camera that the I7 employs to detect objects and avoid obstacles. This means that it isn't able to save maps or access within-app features such as no-go zones.

Another downside is that the iRobot 995 doesn't have mopping capabilities. This may not be an issue if you're looking for a quality vacuum, but it's a major drawback for anyone considering buying a hybrid robot.

The other iRobot that has automatic-empty is the Combo J7+, which can be used to vacuum and mop. It has the same navigation capabilities as the I6+ and best lidar robot vacuum I7 but it doesn't come with iAdapt 2.0 and camera. It isn't able to save any maps and doesn't have the same in-app containment options like the I7 or S9. The Combo J7+ does, however, have improved automation through iRobot Genius and can learn your habits of cleaning to automate cleaning schedules. It also has a larger dust bin than I6+ or I7. It can hold 2.5 liters that is enough for 60 days.

5. IRobot Roomba 960

A cheaper alternative to the 980, the 960 delivers similar performance, but in a smaller. It's still excellent on carpeted and unfinished rooms, removing food crumbs, tracked-in dirt and pieces of paper that have been torn. And it's excellent at navigating and avoiding obstacles. It does a good job of cleaning dirt that has been embedded.

The robot uses iAdapt navigation 2.0 to track its position. This lets it navigate through the space with ease and avoid getting stuck. The top-mounted camera and SLAM combine to let it observe the floor and its objects, allowing it to deftly dodge furniture legs and other obstacles. It can even be placed under tables and couches because of its low profile. It is also able to recharge on its dock when it is it is needed.

The 960's navigational system, although lacking certain advanced features like maps-saving and selective cleaning of rooms, is superior to many other robots. It also has a bigger dirt bin than the 690.

The iRobot Home app for iOS or Android allows you to control the 960. It comes with a range of features for automation which include the ability to set up cleaning preferences, schedule, trigger spot cleans and check the battery's status. You can also track the vacuum's location, and receive notifications if its dirt container is full. The 960 also allows voice commands via Alexa and Google Assistant.
