Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general, are active birds who enjoy playing, interacting, and climb. They must spend at least 2 to 3 hours a day outdoors for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They love playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They also enjoy playing in parks and playgrounds while hiking, and also visiting local bars and restaurants. They are not just a wonderful pet, but they are is also a great pet for children.

They can be extremely loud, despite their love for them. They can also be a nuisance for people living near. They can make high-pitched screech-calls and ear-piercing calls, which can be a nuisance in condominiums and apartments, or in close proximity to children who might be startled by their noise.

The species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. Because of this, the only way to reliably determine sex is through DNA testing. Once sex has been determined, pairing the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Blue and Gold Macaws, like all pets require training to learn commands and phrases. It is a lengthy process and the pet's owner must be patient and realize that this is a tough task. Positive reinforcement can speed up the process and aid in resolving any issues with behavior.

Lolita's Care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to cease performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 blockbuster film Free Willy stirred public outrage over orca Keiko's reintegration into the wild, marine biologists hoped that Lolita might have a similar fate. Sadly, she never had the chance to return to the sea.

Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They undermine her health by making her perform for tourists, putting too much stress on her by putting her through head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, making her lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. In addition, they keep her in an incredibly small tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita an aunt of theirs, pledged to come up with plans with buying a macaw group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe to transport her to open water eventually. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could live for the remaining days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be surrounded by the actual ocean not a concrete tank.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive. In the wild killer whales are highly social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita who has been alone at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is now being released into the wild. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's retirement from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

Miami Seaquarium, and in particular Lolita has been critiqued for the quality of the food they provide to killer whales. The 57-year-old orca was taken from Puget Sound in 1970, and despite being threatened in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that some claim is too small for her.

Lolita's Health

Lolita is beautiful, however her health continues to decline. Animal welfare groups have expressed concerns about her and wish to see that she is returned to the wild. Lolita has been living at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and performed as a tourist attraction for decades. She has suffered from chronic illnesses and a debilitating disease that has left her in a vulnerable state.

The Dolphin Company, which now is the owner of the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information regarding the condition of Lolita. However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates indicate that Toki is ageing rapidly and her health has declined.

It is not known what health issues are plaguing the orca, since her captor isn't required to divulge the information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays a role in the deaths of captive orcas.

Despite the continuing health concerns of Lolita, many people are hopeful that she could be closer than ever to an unspoiled life. The new owner of Seaquarium has pledged to relocate the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure and demands, including from PETA, that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where she can swim in the ocean, and possibly even reunite with the orca thought to be her mother. These plans were too late to save the beloved whale who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a kidney issue.
