1. Neato Botvac D4

If you want the convenience of a robotic vacuum without making too many sacrifices in terms of performance, this Neato is a good option. The D4 is a great choice for those who want a robot vacuum with a lot of features. It comes with handy navigation and mapping tools as well as smart home integration. It also comes with an easy to use app.

You can create the bot by plugging it into its base and then connecting it to your home Wi Fi network. The Neato app will guide you through the initial setup (linking the D4 to Wi-Fi, naming it, etc.). Once the D4 is fully charged it's time to start a cleaning cycle.

Once the D4 is operational it allows you to set up a schedule automatically or manually at any time. You can also utilize your voice to control it using Google Home or Amazon Alexa. If you have an Apple Watch you can start a cleaning session by tapping your wrist.

This model was a success in our lab tests of both hard and carpeted floors, capturing 91.3% combined of debris in serpentine paths. However it's not as effective in corner and edge cleaning as the more expensive models. Its side sensors keep the D4 about 1.5 inches away from walls. And it lacks the side-sweeping brushes that are found on all but the cheapest robotic cleaners. The turret's elevated design means that it can't be placed under furniture with low clearance. However, it does support virtual No-Go Lines so you can draw red lines on your floor plan to signal the D4 not to travel there. The battery lasts for 75 minutes, which is also fairly average. But that's a small trade-off for the convenience this model provides.

2. Roomba from iRobot 990

The Roomba 980 from IRobot is the top-of-the-line robot from the company's line-up that promises top performance and features that are connected. The retail price of the 980 is $800/PS899 however you can often find it for less online.

The 980 is the highest-tech of all our top picks. It has a HEPA-filter which can trap micronized dust and allergens to improve air quality in your home. It also supports a wide variety of floor surfaces including tile and hardwood.

One of the most prominent characteristics of the 980 is its top-mounted camera and SLAM sensor which allows it to navigate more efficiently than other Roombas, even in tight spaces like hallways and corners. iRobot calls this technology iAdapt 2.0 and it uses images from the camera to create an internal map. This helps the 980 keep its track of its location, to ensure that it doesn't spend cleaning time on areas it has already cleaned.

iRobot has also added some new smart features, including the ability to mark a particular part of your home as restricted to the 980. This feature wasn't the most sophisticated or biggest we tested, but it's effective and is a great addition. The 980 can also be controlled using voice commands through Alexa or Google Assistant. The robot may take several minutes to send an order.

The Roomba can return to its base station automatically after it's finished cleaning, making sure it's always ready for the next adventure. This feature is only available on the 980 model, and it's a nice touch that makes the expensive machine more comfortable to own.

3. iRobot 985

iRobot Roomba was designed by iRobot to make your floors cleaner, more beautiful and more powerful with its powerful cleaning system, its smart navigation and smart integration with other iRobot devices. Its patented dirt detection system warns you of areas that require attention, and also includes smart sensors that keep it away from stairs and other risky obstacles. It also automatically recharges and continues to clean until the task is complete. Its advanced mapping technology and vSLAM allows it to navigate an entire floor of your home. It also keeps track of what rooms are left to clean and the location it was.

Its low profile helps it get under furniture and other objects where dust, pet hair, and dirt can hide. In contrast to other robot vacuums, it is also able to clean up dirt in corners and along edges. It's also simple to plan cleaning sessions from any location by using the iRobot app or by using your voice with Alexa and Google Assistant.

It's also iRobot's strongest vacuum, capable of taking on the dirtiest messes and more pet hair unlike other mid-range models such as the Roomba 960. This is because the cleaner has wider brushes that rotate counter-clockwise, and an engine that has more suction power.

The Roomba 995 is also iRobot's lowest-cost vacuum, with recharge and resume features, but it doesn't come with the auto-empty system that the I6+ and I7 offer. It also doesn't have iAdapt 2.0 navigation and the camera that the I7 employs to identify objects and avoid obstacles. It can't access features like in-app containment or save maps.

Another drawback is that the iRobot 995 doesn't include mopping capabilities. While this isn't an issue for those who need a top vacuum, it's a major drawback for anyone interested in hybrid robots.

The other iRobot with automatic-empty is the Combo J7+, which can mop and vacuum. It has the same navigation as the I6+ and I7 but doesn't have iAdapt 2.0 and cameras. It isn't able to save any maps and doesn't have the same options for app-based containment like the I7 or S9. The Combo J7+ has improved automation thanks to iRobot Genius, and can identify your cleaning patterns and automate cleaning schedules. It also has a bigger dust bin than the I6+ and I7 which can hold 2.5 Liters of debris which is enough to last for 60 days.

Roomba 960 by iRobot

The 960 is a less costly alternative to the 980. It delivers similar performance however, in a smaller package. It's great on floors that are carpeted or bare and is able to pick up food crumbs and dirt that has been tracked in. And it's excellent at navigating and avoiding obstacles. It also does an excellent job of cleaning dirt embedded.

This robot utilizes iAdapt navigation 2.0 to track its location. This allows it to navigate through the space with ease and avoid getting stuck. It can see the floor, its objects and obstacles using SLAM and a top-mounted camera. It even has an angled profile that allows it to get under couches and tables. It is also rechargeable at its dock if required.

The 960's navigational system, although lacking some of the latest features, like the ability to save maps and a specific cleaning of rooms, is superior to that of most other robots. It also has a larger dirt bin than the 690.

The iRobot Home app for iOS or Android allows you to control the 960. It comes with a range of automation features that include the ability to create cleaning preferences, a schedule, trigger spot cleanings and monitor the battery status. You can also track the location of the vacuum and get notifications when its dirt container is full. The 960 can also be used to answer voice commands via Alexa and Google Assistant. The iRobot Roomba 960 makes a great choice for most homes. It's well-constructed, incurs fewer recurring costs and has a bigger dirt compartment, and charges more quickly than the eufy RoboVac 11. If you're looking for a lower-cost option that performs similarly on floors with carpets and other flooring The Neato Botvac is a good choice.
