Alex the African Grey Parrot

Irene Pepperberg, an animal psychologist, purchased Alex in 1977 from a pet store located on the Northwest Side. She began a 30-year study that would alter our perception of the intelligence of avian species. Her research with him challenged the common belief that birds could only mimic human speech without any understanding of what it means.

He also was known to drink milk that was spiked with drugs, which his gangmates and he would then use to prepare themselves for their "ultraviolence."

Alex's experience as a parrot in the pet shop was not remarkable however, it was a great experience for him. He was quick to learn words and concepts from his human trainer, Irene Pepperberg. Her thirty-year study of him changed the way we think about animal cognition and communication. Through his life Chris/Alex was faced with a lot of challenges. He had to face the loss of his dad, financial problems, and the adversity. He was capable of overcoming all these challenges through sheer will and perseverance. He never gave up his ambition to become a professional mountain climber. He never gave up on his goal of becoming a mountain climber.

Even after his death he continues to inspire people across the world. The film Free Solo is a documentary about Alex's life and amazing climbing accomplishments. The film has received a lot of critical acclaim, and is considered to be one of the top documentaries of all time. It has also won numerous awards including the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature in 2019.

In addition to his collaboration with Dr. Pepperberg, Alex also pioneered new avenues of bird intelligence. Alex was able to sing more than 100 vocal labels for objects and actions. He was also capable of counting up to six object sets and showed math skills that were quite advanced at the time for a bird.

He was also able communicate with other animals by using sign language, and he had a solid grasp of grammar. He used a training method known as "rival model" which included two trainers who showed the bird what they wanted to teach it. The trainers would change their positions frequently so that the bird could be capable of interacting with them both and receive attention and rewards from each of them.

Alex was named a National Hero in 2014 by President Barack Obama after the success of Free Solo. Alex was able to achieve so much in his lifetime because of his strength of character and his desire to live life on his terms.
