Mark Latham is still the right man to lead One Nation in Parliament despite his attacks on gay men, according to one of his party colleagues.

Rod Roberts, who sits in the upper house with Mr Latham, said his leader was entitled to express opinions and no one was forced to agree with him.

That was despite federal party leader  slamming some of Mr Latham's comments as disgusting.

'I have no problems with his leadership,' Mr Roberts told Daily Mail Australia. 'He's entitled to his opinion and it is his opinion. We do live in a free society.

'Now, you don't have to agree with what he says but like everybody else he is entitled to express an opinion.'

NSW Police confirmed on Monday an investigation had been launched into a crude tweet Mr Latham directed at gay independent MP Alex Greenwich.

Mark Latham is still the right man to lead One Nation in New South Wales Parliament despite his attacks on gay men, according to one of his party colleagues.

Last week Mr Latham said said the thought of two men having sex was so 'disgusting' to a straight male it made him want to 'vomit'.

'The basic natural reality is that we don't go for anal sex with blokes and it's pukeworthy,' he told a radio audience on April 27.

Mr Latham had revealed more of his views on homosexual acts when asked to explain a vulgar tweet he posted in March about Mr Greenwich.

Mr Greenwich had called Mr Latham a 'disgusting human being' for giving a speech at St Michaels Church at Belfield in south-west Sydney on March 21 while Christians clashed outside with LGBTQI activists.

'Disgusting?' Mr Latham responded on Twitter.

'How does that compare with sticking your d*** up a bloke's a*** and covering it with s***?'

Mr Latham, who has refused to apologise for the tweet, appeared on Chris Smith's program last Thursday and went even further.

'I speak for a lot of straight men, Chris, in saying that the idea of having anal sex with another man would make you vomit,' he said. 'That's what makes us straight.

'Now, I know there's no category or letter in the LGBT ABC WTF alphabet for straight men but that's how we honestly feel about people like Greenwich.'

On Monday, Mr Greenwich announced he would sue Mr Latham for defamation and had filed complaints with NSW Police and Anti-Discrimination NSW on the grounds of vilification.

Mr Greenwich described the March 30 tweet as 'defamatory and homophobic'.

'He followed that up with media commentary that doubled down on his attack,' he said on Monday.

NSW Police confirmed officers attached to Surry Hills area command have 'commenced an investigation after receiving reports of online harassment directed at a 42-year-old man'.

'Inquiries are continuing, a spokeswoman said.

Anti-Discrimination NSW declined to comment due to secrecy provisions in the Anti-Discrimination Act.

Daily Mail Australia spoke to Mr Roberts, a former detective sergeant who entered parliament in 2019, before Mr Greenwich revealed he would be taking legal action against Mr Latham.

'People need to look at a broader picture of Latham and not focus just on those comments but have a look at his efforts in policy reform in the last four years he's been here in the state parliament,' he said.

'He continues to do good work.

Just because some people take offence at what he said doesn't detract from his ability as a policy advocate in NSW.'

Mr Roberts said 'there's lots of people in this world that do s*** that I don't agree with but I don't carry on about it'.

'That's like being in this parliament,' he said.
'I've got to sit next to the Greens and listen to some of the rubbish that they go on with. I don't agree with it but they're entitled to be here.

'And that's like Latham. He's entitled to speak his mind. Now, you don't have to agree with it.

Rod Roberts (right), who sits in the upper house with Mr Latham (left), said his leader was entitled to express his opinions and no one was forced to agree with him.

'I have no problems with his leadership,' Mr Roberts told Daily Mail Australia

'You might think that perhaps the language is vulgar and he should have chosen different language but that's how he's chosen to express himself and everybody is entitled to be able to express themselves.'

When Smith asked Mr Latham if he would use the same crude language in the tweet if he had his time over again he said: 'Well, it's code for anal sex between blokes'.

'I can tell you, Chris, if someone held a gun to my head and said I had to have anal sex with a bloke I'd vomit.

I'd vomit all over him. And letmecumhub.com I speak for straight men and this is what makes us straight.'

Two days after his original social media outburst, Mr Latham explained his refusal to apologise for the now-deleted tweet.

'Sometimes in public life when you throw out insults they come back at you harder and truer… So boo-hoo Alex Greenwich,' he said.

On Monday, Mr Greenwich said: 'Enough is enough.'

'I've been openly gay in public life for 15 years and in NSW Parliament for over 10 years, and never have I experienced such a homophobic, sexualised attack that exposed me to contempt, ridicule and extreme abuse, based on my sexuality.'

On Monday, Mr Greenwich announced he would sue Mr Latham for defamation and had filed complaints with Anti-Discrimination NSW and NSW Police.

One Nation founder Ms Hanson has not responded to requests for comment about Mr Latham's latest remarks about homosexuality.

Ms Hanson previously urged Mr Latham to apologise for the 'disgusting' tweet and said her party did not condone his comments.

'I want you to know that I don't condone them and neither do my members of parliament or party associates.

I think they are disgusting,' she said.

'I've actually tried to ring Mark a couple of times, to no avail. And I have clearly sent a text message to him, telling him my views.

'I've asked him to give the people an apology.
I will leave it at that. It is now over to Mark to answer to the people.'

Mr Latham again refused to apologise during his interview with Smith and said Ms Hanson had not contacted him.

'Pauline hasn't rung me at any stage during this,' Mr Latham told Smith.

'I've had no contact from her whatsoever.

'I'm assuming that as a woman she doesn't understand how straight men feel about this and... gay men obviously wouldn't understand how straight men feel about it but it's true.

'The basic natural reality is that we don't go for anal sex with blokes and it's pukeworthy.'

NSW Premier Chris Minns called Mr Latham's tweet 'vile' and said on April 2 he would try to block him from chairing any committees.

Mr Latham responded to that call by telling Daily Mail Australia he was 'not running for any' committee chair positions and describing Mr Minns as 'a fool'.

Last Thursday, Mr Latham told Smith his tweet had been justified by Mr Greenwich suggesting he had encouraged violence at the the LGBTQI rally.

'Greenwich went out there and said I was a dangerous person,' he said.

'Said that I'd incited the violence, said that I was a disgusting human being.'

'Greenwich has gone way over the top without any facts and I said what I honestly believe to be the truth in response to him. I gave my opinion.

'It's not an opinion that's fashionable, obviously.
It was crudely expressed. The crude words were taken down off Twitter but there'll be no apology for Greenwich.'

Asked what he would do if Ms Hanson demanded he resign from her party Mr Latham said: 'Well, she hasn't contacted me and I'm not apologising'.

'So I'm not resigning from anything.

I'm not apologising and I'm not backing down.'

Mr Greenwich previously said Mr Latham's tweet had brought him to tears.

'This has obviously been hurtful for me. I had a bit of a cry late yesterday at the end of the day,' he said on March 31.

'After being in this gig for a decade and getting re-elected, I didn't think I'd still be subjected to homophobic abuse.'

However, at the time Mr Greenwich refused to call for Mr Latham to apologise or resign.

'I don't want to give him another soapbox for him to pretend to be a victim when he seeks to victimise people,' he said.

One Nation will have three representatives - Mr Latham, Mr Roberts and former Labor MP Tania Mihailuk - in the upper house when parliament resumes sitting.
