A robot vacuum is a great tool for maintaining the cleanliness of your home. It will remove dust, pet hair and other debris from the surface before it causes a bigger problem.

1. iRobot S8

This smart robot vacuum and mop combo is an excellent choice for many homes. It comes with a fantastic navigation system with GPS and laser sensors. It also has numerous features and control options that can be accessed through the app. It also has a handy feature which allows you to create cleaning zones in areas that require extra attention, and also to create Keep Out zones in areas where you don't wish it to go. As with all Roomba devices, it is updated with new software updates that make it more efficient over time.

It's expensive, but it's is also among the most sophisticated robot vacuums ZDNet has ever tested. It has a powerful battery that can clean the entire house in less than two hours. It also switches between mopping and vacuuming at the push of a button. It will automatically empty the dust bin above its charging station, unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty it after every run.

It's got a range of other features that make it an excellent choice for homes with a lot of space with its intelligent obstacle avoidance that utilizes both a camera and processor-powered smarts to detect obstacles. It isn't often entangled or trapped during cleaning and is also the most effective in avoiding power cables and other objects I've tested. It's not as reliable in detecting pet waste or other dangers.

2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8

While Anker-owned Eufy has made its name in low-cost robot vacuums it's not yet an all-in-one model that could also mop. That changes with the X8 Hybrid, which has an impressive array of modern features and can compete well with more expensive models.

The laser navigation is the most important feature of this machine. The X8 makes use of a laser mapping system that is more accurate than the previous Eufy devices. It also takes a lot less time to build up a comprehensive picture of your living space and also stores multiple maps, which is great for multi-floor homes.

The X8 is still a decent vacuum for floors that are not clean, slinging debris under its side brushes and into the 400ml dust bin with relative ease. Its tyres are adept at securing corners and edges even though they are circular. It's not a great kitty litter scooper, however, with our tests showing it only removes about 90% of the fur from hard floors.

The basic mopping mode utilizes the same water reservoir as the vacuuming mode. While this is great for spills that are not too large but you cannot limit the amount of water it is using and this will reduce its effectiveness on more serious stains. It is effective in removing pet hair. It has a higher pick-up rate than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Awarded for its quiet and efficient home appliances Miele's RX2 robot vacuum comes with outstanding cleaning power, beautiful design, and a great navigation. There are a few niggles in its operation that prevent it from being ranked as the top smart robot vacuum.

Like iRobot's latest models, the RX2 has dual-sensor mapping technology which uses the LIDAR sensor to map the space and a pair of 3D scanning cameras to detect and avoid obstacles (like furniture legs or pet waste) in real-time. Once the room is mapped the app allows you to designate virtual no-go zones and preferred areas that the robot will clean automatically. You can also manually change cleaning modes, start a manual clean or watch a live feed of the cameras onboard from the main screen.

The RX2 has superior sensors that can detect furniture and other obstructions instantly. And its sweeping and suction power are top-of-the-line, picking up surface litter from carpets with medium piles and dust on floors that are unfinished. It's not the most powerful robot on the market. As with many others it's not a great climber and is prone to problems with things like metal threshold transition strips.

Some people buy a robot vacuum for the ease of setting a schedule in an app and not thinking about it for weeks at one time. But it's important that a robot is able to get the job done, which is why our ZDNet staff looked over and tested a number of the most popular ones to help you find the perfect one for your home.

4. Shark ION

This round, budget robovac looks just like a typical robot, but it's an upgrade in terms of performance and features. Its smart mapping system creates 3D and 2D maps of your house and makes use of them to navigate and avoid obstructions. It can even detect common obstacles like furniture legs and power cords in real-time. This combination of sensors along with a bump sensor, and an infrared sensor for dropping that keeps it off stairs, makes it one of the most flexible vacs we've tried.

It was able to climb over the thick shag carpets and was not stuck (unlike the RoboVac 11s, or Roomba 690-). Its navigation abilities were also impressive. Its composite score for carpet and bare flooring was higher than the competition, and it was able to pick up 98.5 percent of dirt and embedded dog hair from our lab test samples.

Its controls are a bit more basic than those of the competition; there's an oblong cleaning button at the top and you can start it from the app or by voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also set up a schedule for your daily or weekly cleans, set no-go zones, and see the history of its cleaning. Covered in stylish dark gray plastics, Ion feels sturdy and looks attractive in your home. 5. Eufy 11S

If you're looking for a basic, no-frills robot vacuum for a reasonable cost, the Eufy 11S could be a good choice. This model lacks some smart features like Alexa integration and digital mapping found in more expensive models. However, if you do not need these functions, you can save money.

Its self-navigation as well as environmental mapping is a marvel to behold. It is more sophisticated in its automation than its competitors, such as the ability to create virtual boundary markers with its mobile app. It's a capable robot vacuum, even if its app is a bit sluggish and the 980 spins out when it comes across cables.

We love the 980 due to its iAdapt2.0 navigation sensors and visual simultaneity mapping and localisation (or vSLAM) to store the floor plan of your home. It uses this information to create a consistent, efficient cleaning path in every cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a more efficient vacuum mop combo robot than most high-end robots.

Other features include dual multi-surface rubber brushes, which pick up dirt from hard floors and carpet and a spinning brush that sweeps debris into the bin of the robotic vacuum. The sensors for floor tracking help it navigate across furniture and along edges, while Cliff Detect helps to prevent the Roomba from falling down stairs. And it automatically returns to its base station to ensure hassle-free charging between sessions. Although the 980's battery life and bin size aren't quite as efficient as other robot vacuums it's a solid and reliable machine that will keep your floors clean for hours at a time.
