However, she was never given the chance to return to the ocean.

The people who are Lolita's captors – the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They harm her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. Additionally, they place her in a tiny tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately, in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her a relative and plan to eventually move her to open waters. The plan would have included a sanctuary located on the west coast of Washington in which she could reside for the remainder of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean itself, not an empty concrete tank.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild killer whales are extremely social animals that bond with family members until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for over 40 years. Many activists across the country have demanded Lolita's departure from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. Lolita's Diet
