And, like all Roomba devices, it gets new software updates that make it better over time.

It's costly but it's also among the most advanced robot vacuums ZDNet has tested. It's equipped with a powerful battery that can sweep a large area in less than two hours. Additionally, it can switch between mopping and vacuuming at the touch of one button. And, unlike other self-emptying robots that require you to empty the dust bin after each run, this one automatically empties into an even larger waste container on top of its charging dock.

It's got a range of other features that make it a great choice for homes with a lot of space that include intelligent obstacle avoidance that utilizes the camera as well as processor-powered smarts to detect obstacles. It's not often damaged or trapped during a cleaning process, and it's the best at avoiding power cables as well as other objects in my tests. However, it's not as reliable at detecting pet waste and other hazards.

The controls are simpler than the competitors. There is a cleaning button at the top, and you can choose to start it using the app or via voice commands using Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also schedule weekly or daily cleanings, designate no-go zones and check its cleaning history. Ion is covered in a sophisticated dark gray plastic that feels and looks appealing in your home. Its rear dustbin is easily accessible for emptying, and removing the filters is also a breeze.

5. Eufy 11S

Eufy 11S is an excellent option if you're looking for an automated vacuum cleaner that is simple and doesn't have any frills at a reasonable price. It also suggests cleaning the dustbin regularly, replacing the filters and washing or changing the brushes as needed.

The Roomba 980 is iRobot's most popular robot vacuum. It's costly, but it's an excellent performer and is arguably the most sophisticated robot vacuum available. Its self navigation and environmental mapping are something to behold. It is more sophisticated in its automation than most of its competitors, including the ability to create virtual boundary markers through its mobile app. Although its app is a little sluggish, and the 980 does spin a bit when moving over cables, it's a highly efficient robot vacuum.

One thing we really like about the 980 is that it makes use of its iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors and visual simultaneous mapping and localisation technology (or vSLAM) to remember the floor plan of your home. It will use this data to create a consistent and efficient cleaning path in every cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a better robot vacuum than most high-end robots.

Other features of the 980 include two multi-surface rubber brushes which pick up dirt from carpet and hard floors, along with an ejector brush that moves debris into the bin of the robotic vacuum. The sensors for floor tracking help it navigate between furniture and around edges, while Cliff Detect keeps the Roomba from falling down stairs. It also automatically returns to the base station to allow for recharging in between sessions. The bin capacity and the battery life of the 980 aren't as good as other robot vacuums. However, it's an extremely reliable and sturdy machine that will keep floors clean for many hours.
