Lolita’s Personality

Lolita's care

For years activists have been lobbying for the retirement of Lolita's tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the returning of orca Keiko into the wild, those who fought for her believed that Lolita would suffer a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to sea.

Lolita's captors - the Dolphin Company - have ignored the advice of a veterinary doctor and continue to put her in danger. They are a danger to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They over-exert her with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also keep her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who view her as a relative in a plan that would eventually take her to the open water. The plan would have included a facility on Washington's west coast where she could live for the duration of her life, receive human medical care and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was expected to be hundreds of times bigger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals and bond with their families until they die. Lolita has been living in a secluded area at Seaquarium for the past 40 years. The nation's most active activists including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have urged her retirement from Seaquarium's stage and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

However, the non-profit group Friends of Toki has provided monthly updates about her health and well-being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is aging rapidly and her health has deteriorated.

It is not clear what health issues are affecting the orca, since her captor is not obliged to disclose this information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies collected from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays a part in the deaths of orcas in captivity.

Despite the ongoing health issues there is a lot of hope that Lolita could be closer to a life in the wild than before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to transfer the whale out of her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.

The move comes following years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, to have the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into a seaside sanctuary where she could swim deep in the ocean, and possibly even be reunited with the orca believed to be her mother.
