Lolita's Personality

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are active birds who love to play, climb and interact. They need to spend at least 2 to 3-hours a day outdoors to stimulate their minds and get physical exercise. Despite their adoring appearance they are loud and can be a nuisance to those living close by. They can make ear-shattering screeches and loud calls, which can be annoying to those who live in apartments or condos.

This species is also monomorphic. Females and males are difficult to differentiate. This is why DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine the sex. Once sex is known pairing of the birds can be tried and breeding can begin.

Lolita's Care

They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, which exposes her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. They also keep her in a tank one-and-a-half times smaller than her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with a group of Lolita advocates dubbed Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe who consider her an ancestor and plan to eventually move her to the open water. Lolita's Diet
