Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

Macaws are wonderful companion birds. They are smart and affectionate. They are the perfect addition to families with a variety of members. They are easily bored and will seek out other ways to entertain themselves when their owners aren't interacting with them enough. Macaws that are not properly socialized may become aggressive and even bite. It is essential to have clear boundaries set so the macaw shop does not feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that love to play, interact, and climb. They must spend at least 2 to 3 hours every day outside for mental stimulation and physical exercise. They enjoy playing games, learning tricks, and listening to music. They enjoy visiting parks and playgrounds as well as local restaurants and bars. Apart from being a fun pet macaws, they also make wonderful companions for children.

These birds can be very loud, despite their love for their mate. They can also be a nuisance for those living nearby. They can make loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be disruptive in condos and apartments or near children who might be scared by their noise.

The species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. Due to this, the only way to determine sex is through DNA testing. Once sex is established, pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.

Lolita's care

Since the 1960s, activists have been pleading for Lolita to stop performing tricks in Miami Seaquarium. They also would like her to be relocated to an open-water pen. After the 1993 hit movie Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's return to the wild, marine biologists believed that Lolita might have a similar fate. Unfortunately, she didn't get the chance to go back to the ocean.

Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored veterinary recommendations and continued to put her at risk. They cause harm to her health by requiring her to perform for tourists. They push her to the limit with high-speed circles and head-first diving, expose her to chlorine and cause her to lose weight. In addition, they keep her in a tiny tank that is just one-and-a-half times the size of her natural habitat.

Fortunately in 2022 the new owner of Miami Seaquarium pledged to work with an organization of Lolita advocates called Friends of Toki and the Lummi tribe, who consider her a relative in a plan to eventually transport her to open waters. The plan included a sanctuary pen in Washington's westcoast where she could live the remaining days receiving human care and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen was to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and be was surrounded by ocean, but not concrete tanks.

If the plan had been implemented, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) might still be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals that are close to their families until they die. Lolita has been living in buy a macaw secluded area at Seaquarium for over 40 years. People from all over the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and then release into the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

A balanced diet is essential for the health of a blue and gold macaw. These beautiful birds require high-quality food, as well as plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains. A macaw that is well-fed in captivity could live up to 60 years old. This majestic hyacinth bird price also needs plenty of space to fly and exercise.

Akromas and others who have supervised or trained Lolita's health in the past are concerned about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she is eating more than 115 pounds of salmon herring, capelin, and squid per day.

The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they provide their killer whales, particularly Lolita. The orca, who was 57 years old, was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and despite being threatened in the wild, she lives in an aquarium that many consider too small for her.

Lolita's Health

While her beauty is unquestionable, Lolita's health continues to decline. She's been a source of concern for animal welfare groups who want to see her returned into the wild. Lolita, who has lived at the Miami Seaquarium in Miami since 1970, has been a tourist attraction for decades. She has battled chronic illnesses and an infection that has left her in a fragile state.

The Miami Seaquarium is now owned by the Dolphin Company, has not shared information on Lolita's current health. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has posted monthly updates on her health and well-being on their website. These updates reveal that Toki is ageing rapidly and that her health has deteriorated.

It is unclear what specific health issues are plaguing the orca, as her captor isn't required to share this information. The Orca Project created a repository of necropsies from Sea World. This shows that kidney disease often plays an integral role in the deaths of orcas kept in captivity.

Despite the ongoing health issues there is a lot of hope that Lolita could be closer to living in the wild than before. Seaquarium's new owner Seaquarium has made it clear that he will work to transfer the whale out of her tank into her home waters in the Pacific.

After years of pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean, where she can take a deep dive in the ocean, perhaps even being reunited with her mother orca. Sadly these plans came late for the beloved whale who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal issue.
