Lolita's Personality

Macaws make wonderful companion birds. They are intelligent and affectionate. These birds are ideally suited to families with a range of members. They can be bored quickly and will find ways to entertain themselves even if their owners aren't engaged with them often enough. If they are not socialized properly macaws can become aggressive and even bite. It is essential to establish clear boundaries so that the macaw representative species doesn't feel threatened.

Blue and Gold Macaws, in general are active birds that are a joy to play with, interact with and climb. They need at least 2 to 3 hours each day in their cages to get physical exercise and mental stimulation. They love playing games as well as listening to music and learning new tricks. They also love playing in parks and playgrounds as well as hiking and going to local restaurants and bars. They are not just a great pet but they are also a great companion for children.

Despite their adorable nature however, these birds can be loud and can cause a disturbance for those living near. They can make loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which can be a nuisance in condominiums and apartments, or near young children who might be scared by their noise.

This species is also monomorphic. Males and females are difficult to differentiate. For this reason, DNA testing is the only method of determining sex. Once sex has been determined pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding can begin.

Lolita's care

For a long time activists have been lobbying for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy stirred public outrage for orca Keiko's reintegration back into the wild, activists and marine biologists hoped Lolita might have a similar fate. Sadly, she never had a chance to return to the ocean.

The captors of Lolita, referred to as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a veterinarian and continue to put her at risk. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, overexerting her by putting her through head-first dives, which expose her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. Additionally, they place her in an incredibly small tank that is less than one-and-a half times the size of her natural habitat.

In 2022, the new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, promised to develop a plan with a group of Lolita supporters, known as Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to transport her to open water eventually. The plan would have included a facility located on the west coast of Washington in which she could reside for the rest of her life, receive medical attention and be monitored by researchers. The sanctuary pen was planned to be hundreds of time larger than her Miami home and is surrounded by ocean, not concrete tanks.

If the plan had gone through, Lolita (also known as Tokitae or Toki) could be alive today. In the wild, killer whales are social animals and are close to their family members until they die. Lolita has been a captive at Seaquarium for 40 years. People from all over the country have called for Lolita's release from Seaquarium and eventual release in the wild. The activists include Ric O'Barry, who was a former Flipper trainer, Empty The Tanks, and Orca Network.

Lolita's Diet

Lolita's Health

After years of pressure from PETA and others and the Miami Seaquarium has finally released Lolita to a sanctuary on the ocean, where she can take a deep dive in the ocean and possibly even be reunited with her orca mother. These plans were too late to save the beloved whale, which died on Friday due to what was thought to be a kidney problem.
