Lolita the Blue and Gold Macaw

Lolita's Personality

Macaws are an excellent companion bird. They are intelligent and affectionate. They thrive in well-rounded families. They can become bored quickly and will find ways to keep themselves entertained if their owners are not involved enough with them. If not properly socialized macaws can become aggressive and can even bite. It is crucial that boundaries are clearly established so that the Macaw Care Guide doesn't feel threatened.

In general, Blue and Gold Macaws are energetic birds that love to play, climb and play. They need to spend at least 2 to 3-hours each day in the outdoors to keep their minds stimulated and for physical exercise. They love playing games while listening to music, and learning tricks. They enjoy visiting playgrounds and parks as much as local restaurants and bars. They are not just an excellent pet, but they are also a great companion for children.

Despite their adorable nature however, these birds can be loud and can be a nuisance to those living close by. They can make loud, ear-splitting calls and screech-calls which could be a problem in condos and apartments or near children who might be scared by their roar.

The species is also monomorphic. Females and males can be difficult to distinguish. This is why DNA testing is the only reliable way to determine the sex. Once sex is established pairing the birds can be attempted and breeding may begin.

Like all pets, Blue and Gold Macaws require training to learn commands, phrases, and tricks. This is a long process and the owner must be patient and realize that this is a difficult task. The use of positive reinforcement can help speed up the process and help correct any behavior issues.

Lolita's care

For decades, activists have been pleading for Lolita's retirement from performing tricks at Miami Seaquarium and relocation to an open sea pen. Following the 1993 film Free Willy sparked public outrage over the return of orca Keiko into the wild, activists were hopeful that Lolita was likely to suffer the same fate. Sadly, she never had a chance to return to the sea.

Lolita's captors, known as the Dolphin Company, have ignored the advice of a vet and continued to put her in danger. They harm her health by forcing her to perform for tourists, overexerting her with head-first dives, exposing her to chlorine, which causes her to lose weight and sabotaging her immune system. They also put her in a tank one-and-a half times smaller than her natural habitat.

In 2022, a new owner of Miami Seaquarium, who calls Lolita as a cousin of theirs, promised to work on an arrangement with a group of Lolita supporters called Friends of Toki, and the Lummi Tribe, to move her to open water eventually. The plan included a facility on the west coast of Washington where she could spend the remaining days, receive human care, and be monitored by scientists. The sanctuary pen would be hundreds of times larger than her Miami home, and would be surrounded by the ocean itself not an actual concrete tank.

If the plan had been successful, Lolita (also called Tokitae or Toki), might still be alive. In the wild, killer whales are social animals who are close to their family members until death. Lolita who has been in a solitary space at Seaquarium in a cage for 40 years, is being released into the wild. Activists across the country including Ric O'Barry (former Flipper trainer), Empty The Tanks and Orca Network have demanded her to retire from Seaquarium's stage, and her eventual release into the wild.

Lolita's Diet

A healthy diet is important for the health of a gold and blue macaw. These beautiful birds require high-quality food, as well as plenty of fresh vegetables, fruits and whole grains. In the wild, a macaw that is well-fed can expect to live for up to 60 years. The majestic bird also requires plenty of space to fly and exercise.

Miami Seaquarium released a series updates on Lolita's status and health however there are many questions. Some experts, such as Akromas, who trained or supervised the care of Lolita at some point, have voiced concerns about her diet. The most recent update on the Friends of Lolita website states that she eats about 115 pounds of salmon, capelin, herring, and squid per day.

The Miami Seaquarium has been criticized for the quality of the food they provide their killer whales, especially Lolita. The 57-year-old orca was rescued from Puget Sound in 1970, and even though the species is endangered in the wild, she is in an aquarium that some claim is too small for her.

Lolita's Health

While her beauty is undeniable Lolita's health continues get worse. Her health has been a cause of concern for animal welfare groups that would like to see her returned to the wild. Lolita has been living at the Miami Seaquarium since 1970 and has been an attraction for tourists for many years. She has battled chronic illnesses and an infection that left her in a fragile state.

The Dolphin Company, which now owns the Miami Seaquarium and is owned by the Dolphin Company has not provided any information about Lolita's condition. Friends of Toki, a non-profit organization, has posted monthly updates on her health and well being on their website. These updates indicate that Toki is aging rapidly and that her health is declining.

It is not known what health issues are affecting the orca, since her captor is not obliged to disclose this information. However, a database of necropsies from Sea World that was created by the Orca Project shows that kidney disease is often a factor in the deaths of orcas in captivity.

Despite the ongoing health concerns of Lolita many believe that she could be closer than ever before to a wild life. The new owner of Seaquarium has pledged to transfer the whale out of her tank to her natural waters in the Pacific.

The move comes after years of public pressure as well as from PETA and PETA, which demanded that the Miami Seaquarium release Lolita into an ocean-side sanctuary where to buy macaws she could swim deep in the ocean, and possibly even meet the orca believed to be her mother. Unfortunately the plans came too late for the whale that was so beloved, who passed away on Friday due to what was believed to be a renal issue.
