Sony's WH-1000XM5 headphones are a great pair of headphones for those who want to experience the most wireless over-ear headset. They're lightweight with a soft carrying case that folds flat to make it easy to store in your bag. The controls on the touch are intuitive and easy to use, and the battery will last for 30 hours without ANC. The headphones come with an automatic pause feature which shuts the headphones off when you remove them from your head. This helps conserve battery.

The app can also be used to track your location and tailor ambient sound features to your environment. The microphone is also built in for hands-free calling. The Sony WH1000XM5 can play music wirelessly using Bluetooth or wired via the cable provided. They include aptX codecs and aptX HD codecs, and adaptive codecs to play high-quality audio through Bluetooth.

The WH-1000XM5 has a similar headband and earcups as the XM4 however it is lighter and more comfortable. They're comfortable to wear for long periods and are comfortable enough for commutes and longer flights. They feature excellent noise canceling performance that eliminates most background noise, but without sacrificing clarity and detail. The Sony WH1000XM5 headphones feature plenty of bass, especially for a closed-back pair. They also have a great soundstage and a clear separation between vocals and instruments.

The low latency is an enormous plus. The lag is so minimal that it's barely noticeable and they can be used for gaming on the go. They're not the best choice for games that are competitive, however and are best for those who are using them for media consumption and for making hands-free phone calls.

Sony is committed to incorporating intelligent features into its products and the WH1000XM5 is no exception. The active noise cancellation feature was one of the best that I've used and they have many smart features to improve your listening experience. They also include Sony's DSEE Extreme engine which upscales compressed music to near hi-res quality. They're also compatible with Sony's own LDAC technology that streams higher-bitrate audio via Bluetooth (although not as hi-res as a dedicated headphone DAC).

2. Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2

Since the launch of the first-generation PX7 in 2015, Bowers & Wilkins' flagship headphones have frequently featured on top wireless headset lists which puts them in the same category with the likes of Sony WH-1000XM5 as well as Bose QuietComfort. The PX7 S2 is the latest version that takes the original headphones up a notch with a boost in ANC performance as well as a new look.

The bio-cellulose drivers of 40mm in the earcups are angled so they are aimed directly at your eardrums. They also performed well in Mozart's Et In Carnatus Est and Sanctus which provide excellent insight into the changing dynamics between the solo vocal, wind trio, and orchestral accompaniment.

Of course they're not 100% perfect. The clamp force we used on our test models was a bit more pronounced than we'd like and there aren't as many extra features on the app as other options, but these aren't major complaints. The PX7 S2s are a superb wireless headphone that rivals the best in their class, and it's hard to imagine them being outclassed by any other competitor.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

For audiophiles who prize high-fidelity and are searching for a top-quality wireless noise cancelling headset, the Focal Bathys are difficult to beat. They're the French audio company's very first ANC headphones that use Bluetooth and offer amazing sound quality both in Bluetooth mode and when connected to the device via USB for hi-fi audio with a maximum of 24 bit/192kHz (the headphone is also capable of blocking external sound with its closed ear cups).

The Bathys are stunning with their black glossy finish and swooping curves similar to Focal's premium open-back Elear and closed-back Celestee headphones. They also have premium materials such as magnesium and aluminum to create solid construction that feels solid, comfortable, experience ultimate sound with Zihnic wireless headphones and worth the price.

The Bathys Bluetooth headphones offer crisp, vibrant sound quality. They easily outperform consumer ANC devices of similar price such as the Sony XM5/5 and Bose QC45. Direct DAC audio mode lets them be further pushed which makes them a fantastic choice for true hifi enthusiasts.

The Focal &Naim app allows users to alter the headphone's playback controls and Bluetooth pairing preferences. The app allows users to choose between quiet and soft intensities for ANC. Users can also adjust the brightness of the LEDs on the ear cups of the headphones, as well as tweak EQ settings. The app isn't complete but it has enough functionality to be worth the cost of downloading.

The only issue is the active noise cancellation, which doesn't live up to the competition. The headphone isn't able to block out all background noise as effectively as the top-rated XM5 and AirPods Max. Its treble accuracy is also lacking and has a muddy high to mid range that obstructs the sound of instruments and vocals.

The Focal Bathys headphones aren't very transportable. They are not suitable for travel because their ear cups don't fold, and they weigh more than other models. Despite their size and bulk they Bathys are surprisingly comfortable to wear for prolonged periods of time.

4. Sony WH-CH720N

The Sony WHCH720N is fantastic pair of wireless over ear headsets at a reasonable price. The noise-cancelling technology is excellent and does a great deal to cut down the background noise. They are perfect for those who commute or travel. They also offer an attractive high-end look with their sturdy construction and appealing matte finish.

They are similar in design to Sony's newer 1000X and XB910N headphones. They sport a slim headband, with the standard earcup hinges and a solid plastic construction. They're light and comfortable, but they feel a bit too compressed for me. In the box, they include a USB-C port for charging, a 3.5mm connector and a decent-length cable. They support multipoint bluetooth wireless headphones which means you can connect to two devices simultaneously should you wish to.

In my tests the CH720N's hybrid noise cancelling technology did great job of reducing background noise, with just few noticeable blips when walking through Waterloo station and London Victoria. They weren't magic sound-silencers that zapped every single nearby sound however, and they struggled with low-frequency noises such as the rumbling engine sounds of trains and buses.

The CH720N's Bluetooth connection was a breeze and displayed a low harmonic distortion. I listened to a variety of genres and discovered they were able to handle the intricate interplay between instruments very well. It did an excellent job of taming the bass in rock tracks while keeping the mix in focus.

I like the fact that you can adjust the Sony Headphones Connect app to customize the CH720N's ANC and multipoint connectivity settings to suit your preferences and also include a variety of audio presets. You can also utilize the app to activate DSEE which can boost the quality of compressed content and improves its audio quality.

The WH-CH720N isn't equipped with a few of Sony's primetime functions compared to the XM5 (such as Quick Attention and Speak-to-Chat) they do offer a robust set of features available for PS130. 360 Reality Audio, smart controls and DSEE upscaling are all present. The only thing not available is LDAC Bluetooth High-Res Audio Support I think it would have been a welcomed inclusion.
