1. iRobot S8

This smart robot vacuum and mop combo is a great option for homes with a variety of. It has a great navigation system that includes GPS and laser sensors. It also comes with many features and controls that are accessible through the app. It comes with a useful feature which allows you to create cleaning zones in areas that require additional attention, and also to create Keep Out zones in areas you don't want it to be. It also gets software updates, similar to the other Roomba products, which make it better over time.

It's expensive however, it's also one of the most advanced robot vacuums that ZDNet has tested. It has a powerful battery that can vacuum an entire home in less than two hours. It also switches between mopping and vacuuming at the touch of a button. And unlike other self-emptying robotics that require you to empty the dust bin after each run, it automatically emptys itself into an even larger waste container on top of its charging dock.

It also comes with a variety of other features, such as intelligent obstacle avoidance, which utilizes cameras in conjunction with processor-powered smarts to recognize obstacles. It is rarely derailed or stuck during a cleaning process. In my tests it was the most effective in avoiding objects such as power cables. It's not as reliable in detecting pet waste, or other dangers.

2. Eufy RoboVac X8 Hybrid

While Anker-owned Eufy has made a name for itself in the field of low-cost robot vacuums, it hasn't previously offered an all-in-one model which can also mop. That's changed with the X8 Hybrid, which has an impressive suite of advanced features and can compete well with more expensive models.

The main selling point of Eufy's this machine is its laser navigation. The previous Eufy devices have created an outline of your home using infrared sensors and bumping into objects, but the X8's laser mapping system is more precise. It also takes a lot less time to construct an accurate picture of your home and can store multiple maps, which is ideal for homes with multiple floors.

The X8 is still a good vacuum on bare floors and can sling debris over its side brushes and into the 400ml dust bin with ease. The X8's tyres, despite their circular shape, are good at grabbing corners and edges. It's not a great kitty litter scooper, however as our tests show it can only remove about 90 percent of the fur from hard floors.

The basic mopping mode uses the same water reservoir as the vacuuming mode. While this is good for spills that are not too large but you cannot limit the amount of water it is using and this will reduce its effectiveness on more severe staining. It does, however, do an excellent job of removing pet hair, with a higher pickup rate than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Miele's RX2 robotic vacuum is known for its quiet, powerful appliances. It has a beautiful design, a great navigation system and a powerful cleaning power. However, it does have some operational hiccups that prevent it from being ranked as the top overall smart robot vacuum.

The RX2 is equipped with a dual-sensor mapping system that uses a LIDAR to map a room and a pair of 3D scanning cameras for detecting and staying clear of obstacles (such as furniture legs or pet waste). After the room has been defined and assigned, you can designate virtual no-go areas and sections that you would like to be the robot. You can also begin cleaning manually or change the cleaning mode, view live feeds from the onboard cameras, and more from the main screen.

The RX2's sensors work well in registering furniture and other obstructions in real-time. The suction and sweeping power are top-notch and cleans up surface debris from carpets of medium pile and dust in bare floors. It's not the most powerful robot on the market. It's not the most efficient climber and has issues with metal threshold transition strips.

4. Shark ION

This round, budget robot is just like a typical samsung robot vacuum, but it's upgraded in performance and features. Its smart mapping system creates 2D and 3-D maps of your home and makes use of them to navigate and avoid obstacles. It can even identify common obstacles such as furniture legs and power cords in real-time. This combination of sensors, together with a bump sensor and an infrared drop sensor which keeps it off the stairs, makes it one of the fastest vacuums we've tried.

It was able to walk over the thick shag carpets and did not get stuck (unlike the RoboVac 11s, or Roomba 690-). Its navigation capabilities were impressive. Its composite score for carpet and bare flooring was higher than the competition, and it was able to pick up 98.5 percent of the pet hair from our laboratory test samples.

The controls are more basic than those of competitors. There's an uniform cleaning button on the top. You can access it via the app or via voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant. The Roomba 980 is iRobot's flagship robot vacuum. It's costly but it's an excellent performer and is arguably the most sophisticated robot vacuum available. Its self-navigation feature and environmental mapping is something to behold. It also comes with more advanced automation features than many competitors, such as the ability to set virtual boundary lines using its mobile app. Although its application is a bit slow and the 980 can spin out a bit when moving over cables, it's a very capable robot vacuum.

We love the 980 because it uses its iAdapt2.0 navigation sensors as well as visual simultaneity localisation and mapping (or vSLAM), to memorise the floor plan of your home. It uses this information to create a consistent, efficient cleaning path in every cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a better robot vacuum cleaner than the majority of high-end robots.

Other features include dual multi-surface rubber brushes that pick up dirt from carpet and hard floors, along with the spinning brush that sweeps debris into the bin of the robotic vacuum. Its floor tracking sensor helps it navigate between furniture as well as along edges and the stairs. Cliff Detect prevents the Roomba from falling. And it automatically returns to its base station to ensure hassle-free recharges between sessions. The bin capacity and battery life of the 980 aren't as impressive as those of other robot vacuums. However, it is a solid and reliable machine that can keep floors clean for many hours.
