Door Handle Replacement

Door handles seem like something minor but if you aren't happy with the way they look or find them difficult to use, it's worth replacing them. With a bit of patience, you can get a new handle in no time.

Most modern door handles have cover plates that conceal the screws for an attractive appearance. If your new handle does not already have them connected, you'll have to attach them separately.

Removing the Old Handle

Door handles are not only important for their aesthetic value to your home but they're also crucial for safety as they let you lock and unlock your door. Over time the door handle could start to lose its grip or feel loose. It might be beginning to appear aged and worn. This is a clear indication that it's time to replace your door handle.

If your door handle is becoming difficult to use, it might be time to replace it. This is a serious issue since you won't be capable of locking or unlocking the euro door handles, which could put you and your family at risk.

The Strike Plate

If your current latch plate is rectangular, swap it out for the circular one so that the latch is able to hook into the strike plate in a manner that makes the handle more comfortable to operate.

The first step is to remove the screw that's holding the old latch plate in place. These screws are often tight, and may require some force to loosen. If you can, it might be helpful to have another person assist you with this task.

Once the screws are removed and the latch plate will slide out of the door with ease. If it is stuck or doesn't move using a nail file to scrape around the edges of the latch plate. This can help loosen the plate.

Now you can move on to creating the new door strike plate to be installed. Screw the latch plate into the doorjamb using the wood screws that came with the new handles. Don't over tighten your screws as this could damage the strike plate.

If you're unsure if the latch plate is in the proper position You can try closing and opening the door to check whether it latches and closes correctly. If it doesn't then you'll have to adjust the strike plate upwards or down, or even forward or back until the door closes and latches properly.

If the door still moves or jiggles, you may need to increase the size of your latch hole on the strike plate. This is more prevalent in older doors, however it can happen due to wear and tear hinge mortises that are not deep enough or are not sized correctly for the latch, or because of damaged or broken strike plate. If this is the case you can use a metal file instead of a chisel, or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Remove the Latch

The latch is a curved metal piece that slides into and out of a hole in the inside of your door. The latch is pushed forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into the door frame to ensure that the door is closed. If your door is wiggles when you close it, changing the latch might be all that's needed to fix it.

The screws that secure the door latch are hard to spot, but you can usually insert a screwdriver into a small hole on the trim plate and pry the latch off. After removal of the trim plate you should be able to take off the latch and the bolts that hold it and the spindle that holds it.

If the latch won't release it is suggested to use an old-fashioned paper clip or tool to release it from the handle mechanism. Place the item into the recessed latch slot and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel the handle and latch begin to separate. It may take this several times before the latch becomes loose enough to let it out.

After the old latch has been removed, you should be able to insert the new latch into the slot without any issues. Use your new screws to connect the latch to the strike plate or door frame. Make sure that it is properly positioned in the slot and aligned with the screw chambers.

Before you install the new handle, make sure to measure your current backset (the distance from the center of the big hole on the double glazed front door handles of the door to the edge). Also, ensure that the latch size on the new handle is in line with the measurement of your existing handle.

You'll need a new cylinder for your lock if replacing the latch and handle or if your current one is damaged. If you're not changing locks, the new latch will fit in your existing recess, and be compatible with your current keys. Be sure to select an entry point with a rectangular cover plate that match your old handles.

Removal of the Cover Plate
