Types of UPVC Door Handles

Lever/Lever

A lever is a rigid rod that pivots around the point. When you apply force to the end, the fulcrum is likely to rotate in the direction that the force is applied. This rotates the fulcrum, increasing the applied force which allows you to lift or move something that would require a greater amount of force if you attempted to apply directly to the load.

The distance between the fulcrum of the lever and the point where you apply force determines the maximum amount of movement. This is referred to as the mechanical advantage. The mechanical advantage increases as the lever gets extended. You can calculate the advantage by dividing the distance from the fulcrum to the point at which you are applying the force by the distance between the fulcrum and the end of the lever.

Levers also have various effects based on the way in which forces are applied. A lever of class 2 for instance has a tendency of turning in the opposite direction when an force applied to it. If you push the door's handle, the forces will produce similar rotational effects to this.

However, levers don't create energy. Levers multiply the force by converting small amounts of effort applied over a longer distance into greater amounts of force applied over shorter distances. Levers are used to lift heavy objects and transport large amounts of cargo. This is also the principle behind the levers you find in a variety of everyday tools, such as crowbars, fishing rods hammer claws and even your own legs when you stand on the hand brake of your car.

Lever/Pad

Lever pad handles are a type of door handle made from UPVC that has levers on both sides that operate the multipoint lock. These come in many variations and finishes and can be used with a variety of materials like UPVC, Aluminium & Timber doors. They are sold in pairs for the inner and outer door, with screws and spindles included. They are available in both unhanded and handed versions to suit different users.

They are commonly used in new constructions and are installed to replace existing upvc doors. They are usually operated by lifting up the levers to throw all of the multipoint locks and turning the key to close and unlock. They offer a little more security than traditional lever door handles because locking can only be performed through the inside with a key.

They're not as secure as a cylinder lock but they are a cost-effective way to increase the security of your home. The only drawback is that they do not offer the same level of protection as a cylinder bolt, and consequently don't block access to outside if the door has been left open.

Typically, these will be designed to work with a 92mm lock, or the replacement upvc window handles version called a Paddock lock. They will feature an 82mm cylinder centre on the inside and 62mm on the outside. They are also fitted with two spindle followers. Some are inserted into the back plate while others are removable to enable different fixing centres.

Lever/Snib

Lever latches, which are the simplest of all door handles, are utilized. Pushing down on the lever operates a simple latch mechanism inside the door to keep it shut, and can be locked with a key. Certain lever privacy handles operate on the same principle but with an additional knob, similar to the doorknob.

A snib is a very useful tool, especially in homes where privacy and security are essential. If your partner is arriving at home late from work, you can apply the snib button to ensure that they can't get in until they're ready in. This type of handle is also popular in interior doors like bedrooms, where you might need to restrict access from the outside.

In some instances there are instances where snib buttons could cause issues, especially if you have older locks and doors that are bent. If the snib button was accidentally pressed or by someone who is not familiar with it, the door may slam and lock you out. Most of the time, you can get in by knocking on the door frame or the letterbox, but this isn't ideal.

Lever/Moveable Pad

This is a popular handle design for front doors that has the advantage of stopping the door from opening from outside without a key if the lock isn't deadlocked. This is achieved with a 'pad-shaped' external door handles and locks handle that locks into the gap between the handle and the lock case.

This handle is designed to work with uPVC multipoint locks that employ a split spindle mechanism. This kind of operation requires that the lever handle and external pad handle both be fitted to the same lock case. It could be a simple replacement for the current uPVC handle, but it could also require a new lock case or a new set to handle furniture.

Lever/Moveable Snib

The lever handle is one of the most well-known kinds of door handles made from upvc and is available in a variety of designs. It consists of two handles that can be moved and locked using a thumbturn cylinder or the use of a key. Pad handles are an alternative to a lever/lever handle.
