Window Sash Repairs

The sash is an internal frame that can move up and down vertically in windows that open. This article will teach you how to do simple sash repairs.

Weather Stripping

Wooden window repairs sashes can add an elegant look to your home. They are also sturdy and will last for many years when they are maintained properly. They can, however, get damaged or deteriorated over time due to exposure or normal wear and tear. Sash repair specialists can restore windows back to their original condition and keep them looking great much longer than replacement windows.

The first step in sash window repairs is addressing weather stripping, which is found on both the sash and frame. It could cause drafts if worn out or loose. To fix it, begin by finding your window brand and the date on which the glass was manufactured (etched in the corner of the glass or on the aluminum spacer between panes). Remove the sash and mark its width and height so you can find a replacement weather stripping that matches.

Next, remove the sash and place it on a surface to allow access to all four sides. If the sash is double glazed window repairs-hung, you'll also need to remove the weights as well as the ropes that go with them that should have fallen into the intended pocket in the jamb liner. After removing the sash using the utility knife, take off the old weather stripping by hand or with the putty blade.

This coating will protect the putty and give your sash a fresh look.

Sash Hardware

The hardware that supports window sashes may wear out with time and use. This can result in the window or door that is difficult to open or close. The good thing is that fixing and replacing this hardware is typically very simple and cost-effective. If a sash is difficult to operate try spraying oil into the jamb channel then open it to see if that solves the issue. If the problem persists it's likely the sash balance. Remove the sash and remove the hardware, including the parting beads (Photo 2) and the cords or chains that hold it in place. Soften any hardened putty using a heat gun set to medium and fitted with a shield to block the nozzle. Take off the old sash and store it in an bag that is labeled.

Sash Weights

Sash weights can be changed to enhance the efficiency of your window sash and decrease the cost of energy. Sash weights are heavy, lead or iron cylinders that are enclosed inside a hidden compartment and connected to the movable the sash with a rope. These weights act as counterbalances and allow you to open and shut the window without the need for mechanical or electrical devices. You should be able to move the sash around freely, though it may require lubrication if it feels stiff.

Determine the length of the sash chain or sash cord needed to reach the sash slot at the bottom, and the pulley located at the top of the jamb. Cut the chain or cord and secure it as in Step 6 above. You can use either a hammer, nails, or screws. However, nails are less likely than screws to cause damage.

It is best to keep the original weights if you've purchased a kit that will replace the counterbalance that was previously installed. It's not too expensive to purchase these from salvage shops for architectural purposes and they'll be simple to install once you have the sash open. Based on the dimensions and shape of your window, you might need to install one or two sashweights to keep it open.
