Take off the plastic caps at the top and bottom of the handle. This is an easy task that shouldn't take more than five minutes using an screwdriver.

Loose Screws

Over time, a window handle may become loose due to wear and tear or usage. If you feel the handle is unstable or difficult to open, it could be that the screws are loose. This is a simple fix that can be done with a screwdriver in minutes.

Remove any plastic caps that are covering the screws at the sides and top of the handle. They can be removed using either a flathead or a fingernail. After the caps have been removed, start with the screw on the top and tighten it slowly until it's secure. Be careful not to tighten it too much as this could cause damage to the screw's head. Then move on to the screw on the bottom and tighten it in a similar manner. After both screws are tightened, the handle should feel more solid and be easier to open.

If you think your window handle is loose, or the lock paddle isn't able to be put in, it could be time to replace the crank mechanism. Mail order is available from a wide range of hardware repair experts. It's cheaper than replacing the entire handle. Alternatively, you can try tightening the existing crank by opening the window until the guide bushing is aligned with notch in the guide track. After carefully pushing down on the handle, take off any trim mounting screw and lift the casement from the window jamb. (Photo 1) You'll require new trim screws if any are bent or rusted. Install the new one as shown in Photo 5 after comparing it with the old one to ensure they match.

Filling screw holes that are not completely filled with wood before tightening them might be necessary. Filler should be slightly bigger than the screwhole in order to ensure that it does not pierce the surrounding wood when it is bent in place.

Broken Spindle

After a time, the spindle on the window handle could wear out. This can cause the handle to malfunction, or not open properly. Anyone with a basic tool can replace the spindle quickly and easily. It is also crucial to verify the alignment of the handle to ensure that it is securely in place.

Broken Handle

It can be easily fixed by removing the handle and replacing it with a new one.

This can be accomplished by yourself at home with a screwdriver. The first step is to take the handle from the window. This can be accomplished with the screwdriver or other tool that can lift off the plastic cap. This should reveal the top and bottom screws on the base of the handle. With the screwdriver tighten the top screw until it is securely. Be careful not to over-tighten it, as this could damage the handle or the frame of the window.

After you've made sure that the handle is securely attached to its base, then replace the second holding screw, which should be tightened until solid. After that replace the caps made of plastic on both screws and your aluminium window handle should now work just as it should.

Broken Base

The window handle could be loose as time passes. Sometimes, it could cause the window to sag or open when it is it is opened. This usually means that the mechanism isn't being held in place by one of the screws. This is a simple fix, simply loosen the screw using the help of a screwdriver, and then tighten it. Close the window fitters, and then move the handle to its original position.

Sometimes, a handle can break completely from the base section. This happens in both turn and tilt and traditional handles. This is a very rare issue and is only found in areas where it is heavily used. This is a simple fix that can be achieved by replacing the old device.

Another issue that is common is stripping of the handle teeth. This is more common in older windows with the crank handle. The teeth, which are usually made of cast iron, are prone to being ruined by excessive use or old age. It is a simple double glazing repair (try here) and can be repaired with a small vise grip or a pair pliers.

If your handle breaks away from the base, you'll need to take the crank off to replace it. It can be a bit challenging for a novice DIYer to do however, it is doable.

First take off the screw that secures the crank operator to the frame of the window. Then, open the window until the guide bushing aligns with the track's notch. Then, using pliers slide the guide bushing from the crank arm.

After you have removed the old handle, check the crank stud to determine if the teeth are worn. Next, inspect the handle for signs that it is worn. If the splines are worn you must continue replacing the handle on the window or think about replacing the entire crank handle, advises Family Handyman.

To attach the new window crank handle, attach the trim cover to the frame and then reattach any screws that are rusted. Assemble the base plate by securing the remaining screws. Make sure that the holes for the mounting screws are in line with the mounting holes of the new handle. Make sure that you do not over tighten the screw, as this could cause the swivel or nylon roller to break off from the track.
