This is slightly better than the Roomba i7+, which only collects 94.6 percent and the Shark Ion R85, which only manages to pick up 100 percent. The D7 can also move well on both bare carpet and high-pile carpet.

A second feature is the option to select between two cleaning intensities. There's an Eco mode that operates the vacuum in a quiet manner and extends the run time, and Turbo mode provides the most powerful cleaning. However the Turbo mode runs at an antisocial volume, which can be frustrating if you're running the D7 while working or watching television.

The D7 is among the few robots to create and store multiple floor plans, which is great for multi-level homes. It also has a rapid boost feature that allows it to return to its base to recharge before continuing to clean. This is particularly useful when cleaning areas that are difficult. However, it has a lower maximum battery life than some other models and is subject to higher cost-per-use.

The Q5 is among the slowest-moving robots that we've examined, but it does have an efficient layout algorithm that doesn't need babysitting beyond its first trip through an area. It begins by tracing out an area, and then fills in the interior using a sweep of parallel lines. When the task is completed it is returned to the charging station if it was not at the base.

It was a master of cleaning hardwood floors by sucking at least 88% dirt off each test. It was more difficult to clean low- and high-pile carpets, but still performed better than the standard unit. It also comes with mopping attachments to remove wet spills. We didn't test it.
