How to Replace Window Panes

The glass is held into position by a small metal clip, called a glazier’s point and putty. This compound is also known as glazing compound. Before you install a new pane, first take out the old one and clean the area using the help of a rag, an abrasive scraper that is a pull type or an abrasive wood chisel. Wear safety glasses and gloves while working. You'll need a heat gun if the window is glued to the frame.

If you're planning to install your original sash, remove the molding that supports the old pane. Sand the sash until it is flat and ready for new caulk. Once the sash is installed, apply a new silicone caulk around the glass to ensure it doesn't swell or fade in time.

Once the old glazing points and putty are removed, make a bed for the new pane. Roll a rope with glazing compound between your fingers, and make it about 1/2 inch thick. Then, push it into the rabbets in which the glass will be. The glass should rest against the putty on both sides. If necessary, lightly tap your glass into the rabbet using your thumb.

If the new pane is cracked, you can cover it with a solvent-based glue or silicone caulk prior to pressing it into the sash. If the crack is not sealed, you'll need to use putty to keep the water out. After the putty has dried, wipe the oily film off of the glass and allow it to dry completely before painting. Paint after the putty has completely dried. It will not create a solid seal and could be leaking or discoloring over time.

Paint

If you've experienced a broken window pane, you might be worried about the expense of replacing it. It's true that replacing a single pane glass doesn't need to be costly when you do it on your own. In fact, even a double-pane window can be replaced at only a fraction of the cost of a professional.

If you are working with large glass windows first, ensure that it is securely attached to the frame. Using the proper tools and techniques, you can complete this task easily and fast.

Once you're ready to begin taking off the old window by prying out the glazing points made of metal that are attached to it. These are tiny triangles of metal that function as "nails", holding the window within the frame.
