The Q30's 40mm speakers effectively eliminate nearly all ambient noise when ANC is enabled. This creates a very pleasant listening experience. Focal's Bathys Wireless are a set of premium over-ear headphones that feature active noise cancellation as well as Bluetooth playback. These headphones are made to be high-end, premium headphones that can be used at home or on the go. They're a little more expensive than similar headphones but their superior sound quality is the main selling factor.

The Focal Bathys come in a compact, slim and attractive, white, fabric-finished box with all the accessories you require inside. The package includes a fold-flat headphone carrying case, USB-C to USB cable, 1.2mm SE cable and an audio adapter.

They're powered by a good 600mAh battery that can get you through a whole day of casual listening and include an audio input for wired use. Wirelessly, they're connected via Bluetooth. You can control their functions with an app (now named Focal and Naim in line with English sister brand headphones bluetooth wireless Naim’s products that are network-aware) or by pressing the button located on the left earcup that scrolls through ANC profiles like silent, soft transparent,' and full.

The app allows you to alter different settings such as the brightness of the LED and EQ presets, including a "music profile' that sounds brighter and more neutral than the others and their battery life. It also allows you to choose the ANC mode and its level, as well as setting an 'acoustic' environment which adjusts the sensitivity of your music to simulate how it would sound like when used in a room with different acoustics.

The Focal Bathys feature a bass-rich sound profile that delivers extra energy, impact and warmth to your favourite tracks. In the end, vocals and instruments are nudged back into the mix and sound muffled, while details like cymbals are somewhat less prominent than you might expect on some other headphones. The headphones are also less effective in active noise cancellation compared to other over-ears with more advanced technology, such as the Sony WH1000XM5 and Apple AirPods Max.

Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony has a fine reputation for its headphones, and the WH-1000XM5 is not an exception. It is a top pick in the mainstream over ear headphone market and borders the luxury lifestyle segment where brands like Apple, Montblanc, Bang & Olufsen and Montblanc are situated. This means that the XM5s are expensive in price tag, but when you can afford it, there are better wireless over-ear headphones available.

The XM5s come with features to help listeners and, in certain instances, automate tasks that they'd otherwise have to handle manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme Engine (which upscales music that has been compressed to near high-res) as well as Bluetooth's LDAC Technology are included. That allows for streaming of high-quality audio with rates that are higher than traditional Bluetooth. The built-in microphone is capable of making calls hands-free.

Like the previous generation of WH headphones, the XM5s excel in noise cancellation. The XM5s do a great job isolating listeners from the background noise of busy airports and streets as well.

The sound quality is excellent. The XM5s may not be as clear in the low frequencies as the XM4, however, there's a more pronounced sense of clarity and openness, too. For example the bass work on Rage Against the Machine's Bullet in the Head flexes the Sonys' muscles with real force and definition without flattening everything else. The XM5s are also able to provide precise and accurate bass notes in Massive Attack's Angel.

Battery life is great and can last up to 30 hours listening time when ANC is on and 40 hours if it's off. This is more than enough for a weekend getaway or a long period of usage.

The only real drawback here is that the XM5s do not have any water resistance or dust resistance protection. In fact, Sony recommends that you not sweat on them or wear them in the rain. This may not be a problem for everyone else however for those who spend long hours in the gym or live in a rainy region this could be a major problem.

Apple AirPods Max

Apple AirPods Max is a pair over-ear wireless headphones that feature Bluetooth technology and noise cancellation. They feature 40mm Apple-designed dynamic drivers with neutral audio profiles that concentrates on the highs and mids while not going too loud on either end of the spectrum. They are perfect for music and movies. They also offer higher fidelity compared to other headphones.

The headphones are light and feel comfortable on your head. The earcups, which are made of memory foam, are covered with woven fabric, and sit comfortably over the ears they do not place pressure on the sides or forehead. The ear cups also tilt and rotate to accommodate various head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges offer a firm, but not too much clamping force that ensures the ear cups remain in place throughout listening sessions.

You can toggle noise cancelling by pressing a small button located at the top of the right earcup. It also has a pushable jog-dial-like button, similar to the digital crown on the Apple Watch, that you can turn to control volume and press it once, twice or thrice for playback controls. Siri can be activated by pressing and holding the button. The buttons are simple to use and are well-placed, however, I would like to have a power button that would shut off the headphones when they are not in use. The headphones automatically go into standby mode after being removed from your ear or placed in their case, and they only wake up when you slide them over your head again.

Another feature that is quite cool is spatial audio, which makes use of the accelerometers and gyroscopes of the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to determine where you're moving, then repositions sound to appear as if they're coming from those locations. This creates a theater-like experience when watching movies and videos recorded in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 or 7.1. The only downside is that spatial audio requires an iOS device to be used and you won't be able enjoy it with other devices.

The AirPods Max is a decent pair, but I would feel a little ripped off when I spend $549 at an Apple Store knowing that the newer model would be better within a year. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and better battery performance, making it difficult to justify the additional expense for most people.
