Private ADHD Titration

There is currently a national shortage of medication to treat ADHD symptoms. This is due to manufacturing problems and an increase in demand worldwide.

Our service provides private ADHD titration instead of waiting for NHS funding via Right to Choose. Our assessment fees cover the cost of one prescription.

Titration

A thorough evaluation of your ADHD symptoms will be conducted by a highly experienced consultant psychiatrist. This includes a thorough medical history, and an evaluation using the common ADHD questionnaires and rating scales.

After your examination After your assessment, you will be informed whether medication is appropriate for your specific situation. This will happen during your follow-up appointment (which could be in person, via video link or by phone). Your doctor will explain the various options for medication and, if you decide to start on medication we will suggest titrating the dose to optimise the balance of benefits and side effects for you.

This process could take several weeks and requires gradually altering your child's dosage until the right balance is reached. It is not unusual to need to adjust two or three medicines before finding the one that is best for your child's adhd titration waiting list symptoms. It is essential that parents participate in the titration and be aware of their child's behavior, so they can inform the doctor whether the medication is helping or causing adverse reactions.

Unless you have decided to return to NHS treatment the medication you take will be given as a private prescription which you will need to pay for at the pharmacy (this is not included in your consultation fees). You will be required to attend regular appointments every six months to monitor your medication. This includes pulse and blood pressure readings. Annual reviews are also required.

Follow-up appointments

After the assessment is completed, you'll be able to book follow-up appointments with your psychiatrist, if necessary. Typically, the appointment will take place on zoom video call however in some instances it might be possible to do an audio only consultation (again at an additional cost).

At this point we will discuss any treatment options and come up with a unique ADHD medication titration plan. This will include an assessment of your medication dose and a discussion of any possible side effects you might be experiencing. The titration sessions cost PS150 for face-to-face sessions, and PS60 via video or telephone consultation. The cost of medication is additional and are paid directly to the pharmacy.

If you are unsure of which one you prefer it is recommended that you talk with your GP prior to booking your private appointment as certain providers have different policies regarding whether they require an GP referral letter or not. Find out if your GP accepts the Shared Care Agreement, which means you will be referred to them when you leave the clinic for medication prescription.

Medication

For many people who seek an individual diagnosis of ADHD treatment is a key part of their journey. Getting a prescription from an NHS psychiatrist can be a hassle and lengthy. NHS waiting lists are notoriously long and GPs are often reluctant to refer patients on to specialist services.

Requesting your GP to refer through Right to Choose is one way to avoid this (see psychiatry - UK and ADHD 360). You can select a provider who offers an assessment on your own and titration. This can cut down on wait time considerably and can be more convenient if you're working and have a busy schedule.

Once you have been referred through this route your chosen doctor will evaluate you and determine whether or not you need to be monitored for a dose of medication. You will be asked to fill in forms that are different for each provider, but the main ones are self-report questionnaires as well as medical histories from childhood to adulthood. These forms will assist your doctor determine any issues that could mean you shouldn't take ADHD medications if they're prescribed.

If you are on a titration medication, this will usually be a combination of stimulants and non-stimulant drugs. These will be thoroughly examined and monitored to determine the right combination for you. The titration procedure can be lengthy and may require several extra appointments before the dose becomes stable.

The frequency of your follow-up appointments will depend on the type and quantity of medication that you are taking. They can be monthly or quarterly. This will involve your clinician checking that you are stable on the medication, logging any side effects you've experienced, and making any adjustments needed to ensure you are on a safe dosage. You'll also be required to attend a routine health check that may include blood pressure, pulse and weight readings and an annual review.

For some it could be that they are satisfied with their medication and don't need an additional discussion regarding their titration meaning adhd.
