Door Handle Replacement

Door double glazing handles seem like an insignificant thing, but if you dislike the appearance of the handles and hinges or are finding them difficult to use then it's time to replace them. Installing a new door handle is easy if you have patience.

Modern door handles are typically equipped with cover plates which hide the screws, giving them a more attractive appearance. If your new handle does not have screws already attached, you will have to attach them separately.

Take off the handle from the old one.

Door handles are not only an important aesthetic addition to your home, but they're essential for security as they allow you to lock and unlock your door. Removing the Strike Plate

The packaging that the new handles arrive in will have two latch plates - either a rectangular or circular (see the diagram above detailing the parts of the door handle). If you have an rectangular latch plate, swap it with an oval one. This will allow the latch to be able to hook into the strike plate and make the handle easier.

The first step is to loosen the screw that is holding the latch plate in place. These screws are often tight, and may require some force to loosen. If you can, it might be beneficial to have another person assist you with this task.

Once the screws are removed, the latch plate will slide out of the door easily. If it's stuck or won't move using a nail file to scrape the edges of the latch plate. This can sometimes open the plate up.

Now, you can proceed to creating the new door strike plate to be installed. Attach the latch plate to the door jamb using the screws that were included with the new window handles. Do not tighten the screws too much as this could cause damage to the strike plate.

If you're not sure if the latch plate is in the right position, try closing and then opening the door to see whether it latches and closes correctly. If it does not, you will need to adjust the strikeplate upwards or down, forward or back until the door locks correctly.

If the door is moving or jiggling, you may need to enlarge the hole for the latch in the strike plate. This is more prevalent on older doors. It could be caused by wear and tear, hinges that are too small, a incorrect size of the latch or a damaged strike plate. If this is the case then you should use a filing made of metal instead of a chisel or hammer to adjust the strike plate.

Removal of the Latch

The latch is a bent metal piece which slides in and out of a hole in the inside of your door. The latch is moved forward when you turn the handle. It also hooks into an opening in the door frame so that the door is closed. If your door shakes when you close, replacing the latch could be all you need to correct the issue.

It's hard to see the screws that hold the latch to the door, however there's usually a tiny slot on the trim plate that permits you to insert a screwdriver and pry it off. After taking off the trim plate you should be able to take off the latch and the bolts that hold it, as well as the spindle that holds it.

If the latch is not easily removed, use a paperclip or tool to remove it from the handle mechanism. Insert the item in the recessed latch slot and gently twist it or jiggle until you feel handle and latch begin to split. If you are replacing the latch or handle, or if your old lock cylinder has been damaged, then you will need an entirely new one. If you're not changing locks, a new lock should fit in your existing recess and also work with your existing keys. Be sure to choose the latch with rectangular cover plates that match your old handles.

Then remove the Cover Plate
