The Focal Bathys wireless are a premium audiophile entry into the booming premium Bluetooth headphone market that has been dominated for a long time by Bose. But with a reputation for crafting the best high-fidelity loudspeakers, Focal couldn't simply scale down to compete in this competitive space. It decided to design its own earbuds with built-in ANC made of the same amplifiers, transducers and other components that are in its flagship products.

The result is an earbud that not only provides top-quality performance, but also feels luxurious and robust. Focal reduced the size and weight from its more upmarket headphones to make these portable headphones more comfortable for travel and still use magnesium for the yokes to keep them lightweight. The design is sleek and elegant, with the circular "skeletonised" design similar to the company's premium, full-sized Focal Celestee as well as LED backlit Focal "flame" logos on the back of each earphone, which actually glow (you can switch this feature in the accompanying app).

When paired with your device, they run with the latest Bluetooth v5.1 technology, which includes support for SBC, AAC, aptX, and aptX Adaptive and an integrated DAC that supports up to 24 bits/192kHz playback. The ear cups can be folded flat for easy storage. The cable can also be detached to use with devices without Bluetooth, such as many cell phones.

The headphones can also be used in DAC-mode, which disables internal processing to provide better sound quality than Bluetooth headphones with built-in DACs. Focal declined to reveal the specific DAC they used, but when tested with a high-quality portable DAC/headphone amp, the Bathys delivered great results--including better-than-CD-quality resolution, tight bass, and an open, airy midrange.

The Focal Bathys are made to be utilized on planes as well as in other noisy environments however, the DAC mode makes them suitable for more focused listening. They have a plasticky build quality, but they are quite sturdy and provide a solid click when you move or flex them. These headphones have decent audio quality, especially given their low cost. The midranges are not as rich as the more expensive headphones, but they still have good detail at most volume levels. The bass is strong and punchy, and the highs are slightly soft, but not a lot. They are great for pop and rock but might not be the best option for genres that have full, deep bass.

The Riff Wireless 2 headphones feature more features than the earlier version. The design is a bit restricted by Razer standards: no RGB lighting or trademark green accents, and the Tri-Snake logo is nowhere to be seen. The headset is, in fact, similar to other Bluetooth headphones, with semicircle hinges that swivel and fold flat on top of the earcups to create a comfortable headband. They're also more lightweight and portable than other gaming headsets, and weigh only 265g when collapsed.

On the right earcup are onboard controls. Power and track control buttons are located next to a multi-function button recessed into it that also doubles as a noise-cancellation button. The controls are easy to use and responsive, and they functioned as expected in my testing.

The Opus bass is a roaring and well-rounded, offering depth and clarity that you won't get in a lot of budget headphones. The sound is not as rich as Bose's Extra Bass, but it's still above expectations for a price of $200. The mids are a solid sound and vocals as well as lead instruments are able to be heard with good clarity. I did notice a little low-end slackness, but changing the EQ to the Vocal setting fixed the issue.

In the case, you'll also find an 3.5mm audio cable and USB C-to-A converter and a standard airplane audio plug for those who haven't yet made the switch yet. It's a tiny, but a welcome addition to make it easier to use headphones when traveling.

Like other THX-certified devices such as the Opus performed well in my tests. I was able to stroll around town without having raise the volume in order to block ambient sound and I never felt like I had to turn my music up to hear it. This is the type of sound quality that will allow you prevent hearing loss from excessive exposure to high frequency frequencies.
