It's costly, but it's is also one of the most sophisticated robot vacuums ZDNet has ever tested. It comes with a powerful battery that can vacuum a large home in under two hours. It can switch between mopping and vacuuming by pressing one button. It automatically emptys the bin of dust above its charging station, unlike other self emptying robots which require you to empty it after every run.

It has a wide range of other features that make it a good option for most homes that include intelligent obstacle avoidance that utilizes the camera as well as processor-powered smarts to detect obstacles. It isn't often entangled or trapped during a cleaning process and is also the most effective at avoiding power cables and other objects in my tests. However, it isn't as effective in detecting pet waste or other hazards.

2. Eufy RoboVac Hybrid X8

Eufy, owned by Anker is now an iconic name in the world of robots that are budget-friendly vacuums. However, it didn't offer the option of a model that could mop. The X8 Hybrid is a new model that offers a range of features that are advanced and can compete with much more expensive models.

The most significant selling point for Eufy with the X8 is its laser navigation. The X8 makes use of a laser mapping system that is more accurate than previous Eufy devices. It takes less time to build an extensive map of your home. It also has the ability to store multiple maps. This is great for multi-floored homes.

The X8 is a decent vacuum cleaner on bare floors. It can easily sling debris through the side brushes and into its 400ml dust bin. The tyres are adept at securing corners and edges, even though they're circular. Our tests showed that it was able to remove 90 percent of the fur on hard floors.

The mopping mode that is the basic one uses the same reservoir of water as the vacuuming mode. While this is good for spills that aren't too big but you cannot regulate the amount of water it uses and this will reduce its effectiveness for more severe staining. It does, however, do an admirable job of picking up pet hair, with a better speed of pickup than the Roborock S7.

3. Miele RX2

Miele's RX2 robotic vacuum is known for its quiet, efficient appliances. It features a stunning design, superb navigation, and excellent cleaning power. But it has a few operational oddities which prevent it from being considered as the best overall smart robot vacuum.

Like the latest models from iRobot and models, the RX2 features dual-sensor mapping technology that uses an LIDAR sensor to map out the space and three 3D scanning cameras to identify and avoid obstacles (like furniture legs or pet waste) in real-time. Once the room has been mapped, you can designate virtual no-go areas and sections that you would like to be the robot. You can also begin a manual clean or manually change the cleaning mode, view live feeds from the onboard cameras and more on the main screen.

The sensors of the RX2 work well in registering furniture and other obstructions in real-time. And its sweeping and suction power are top of the line cleaning up surface debris from carpets of medium pile and dust in bare floors. It's not the most powerful robot on the market. Like many other robots it's not a great climber and has trouble with things like metal threshold transition strips.

4. Shark ION

This round, budget ilife robot vacuum is just like your typical robot but it's an upgrade in terms of performance and features. Its intelligent mapping system creates 3D and 2-D maps of your home and uses to navigate and avoid obstructions. It's even able to spot common obstructions such as furniture legs and power cords in real time. This combination of sensors together with a bump sensor, and an infrared drop sensor which keeps it off stairs is what makes it one of the fastest vacs we've tried.

It was able to walk over thick shag carpets and did not get stuck (unlike the RoboVac 11s, or Roomba 690-). Its navigation abilities were also impressive. Its composite score for carpet and bare flooring beats the competition and it picked up 98.5 percent of pet hair from our laboratory test samples.

The controls are simpler than competitors. There's a round cleaning button on the top. You can access it via the app or by voice commands using Alexa or Google Assistant. You can also create a schedule for your daily or weekly cleans, set no-go zones, and see the history of its cleaning. Clad in smart dark gray plastics, Ion feels sturdy and looks attractive in your home. The dust bin on the rear is easy to access for emptying and cleaning the filter is equally easy.

5. Eufy 11S

Eufy 11S is a great option for those looking for a robot vacuum that's simple and doesn't have any frills at a low cost. It isn't equipped with some of the advanced features, like digital mapping and Alexa integration, found in higher-end models, but if you don't need those functions you can save a little cost with this model.

The robot is simple to use and set up. It doesn't require a smartphone app or Wi-Fi pairing, but it does have an remote control that lets you select various modes and adjust the suction level. It also allows you to manually send the robovac off during scheduled cleaning.

In our tests, the 11S was very effective at cleaning pet hair and dirt on hard floors and in low-pile carpets. Its slim profile made it easier to reach under furniture and other low items that some of the more bulkier robots were unable to reach. It was also able to easily traverse door thresholds and move between floors and another.

The 11S, like other robots will also suckup some objects, such as cords and cat toys. The manufacturer suggests that you can stop this by keeping these objects off the floor and using an organizer for cords if you can. It also suggests cleaning the dustbin periodically, replacing the filters and changing or washing the brushes when needed.

iRobot Roomba 990

The Roomba is iRobot’s flagship robot vacuum. It's costly, but it's the best robot vacuum you can buy. Its self-navigating capabilities and environmental mapping are something to behold. It is more sophisticated in its automation than most of its competitors, such as the ability to create virtual boundary markers with its mobile app. While its app is a little sluggish, and the 980 does spin out a bit while rolling over cables, it's still a highly efficient robot vacuum.

One thing we really like about the 980 is that it uses its iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors and its visual simultaneous localisation and mapping technology (or vSLAM) to memorise the floor plan of your home. It uses this information to create a consistent and efficient cleaning path through each cycle. The result is cleaner floors and a cleaner vacuum than most competing high-end robot vacuums.

Other features include two multi-surface rubber brushes that pick up dirt from carpet and hard floors as well as the spinning brush that sweeps debris into the robotic vacuum's bin. Its floor tracking sensors aid it navigate between furniture and around edges, and best robotic mop and vacuum Cliff Detect keeps the Roomba from slipping down stairs. And it automatically returns to its base station for easy charging between sessions. While the 980's battery life and bin size aren't as efficient as some other robot vacuums, it's a sturdy and reliable machine that will keep your floors clean for hours and hours.
