Like the XM4 The WH-1000XM5 is light and comfortable with a well-padded headband and ear cups. They're comfortable to wear for long periods of time and are comfortable enough for commutes and longer flights. They have good noise canceling performance that blocks out most background noise without compromising on clarity and clarity. The Sony WH1000XM5 headphones have an excellent amount of bass, especially for a closed-back pair. They also provide an impressive soundstage and clear distinction between vocals and instruments.

They have a low latency when watching videos, which is a huge advantage. The lag is so tiny that it's barely noticeable, and they can also be used for gaming on the go. They're not the ideal choice for video games that compete and are a good choice for people who intend to use them for media consumption or to make calls that are hands-free.

Sony's DSEE Extreme Engine upscales compressed audio to near-hi-res quality. They're also compatible with Sony's own LDAC technology which streams audio with higher bitrates over Bluetooth (although not as hi-res as the headphone DAC that's dedicated).

2. Bowers & Wilkins PX7 S2

Bowers & Wilkins flagship headphones, the PX7 S2 have always been on top lists of wireless headsets since the release of the first generation PX7 in 2015. This puts them in the same category as Sony WH1000XM5 or Bose's QuietComfort. The latest model, the PX7 S2, is an upgrade that takes the initial headphones to the next level with better ANC performance and a new design.

In the earcups, 40mm bio cellulose drivers are angled to point straight at your eardrums in order to provide an audio experience that's more intimate than other closed-back headphones. It's a bold statement however, one that the PX7 S2 is able to deliver on. The vocals are clear, and the bass is deep when it's needed.

The PX7 S2 is also very excellent at making calls. It provides crisp, clear sound that does not drown out your voice. The PX7 S2 also offers rapid charging, which will allow you to return to full capacity in less than two hours. They are also compatible with high-resolution music thanks to aptX adaptive Bluetooth codesc that allow them to play 24-bit audio.

For most listeners the most important change is the improved noise cancellation and audio quality. In our tests the PX7 S2 eliminated nearly all of our simulated cabin noise with astonishing efficiency and performed exceptionally when we performed Mozart's Et In Carnatus Est and Sanctus from his Grosse Messe, demonstrating excellent understanding of the changing dynamics between the solo voice, the wind trio, and orchestral accompaniment.

The PX7 S2s are not only noise-canceling, but they also come with a range of other features that make them competitive with other top-rated headphones. They're wireless and Web site come with Bluetooth multipoint support, which means you can pair two devices simultaneously. They also have built-in microphones which allows hands-free calls while using your phone's assistant. They're also extremely robust, with premium-feeling and durably-built construction that should last for years of continuous usage.

They're not perfect, but they are. The clamp force of our test models were a bit more than we would have liked and there weren't as many apps features as the other options. However, these aren't major issues. The PX7 S2s are a fantastic wireless headphone that competes with the top of their class, and it's hard to imagine them being outclassed by any other competitor.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

For audiophiles who value high fidelity and are looking for a premium wireless noise-canceling headset, the Focal Bathys are tough to beat. They're the French audio company's very first ANC headphones to use Bluetooth and provide incredible sound in both Bluetooth mode and when connected to an device via USB for hi-fi audio at up to 24-bit/192kHz (the headset is also capable of blocking external sound through its closed ear cups).

The Bathys are stunning with their black glossy finish and swooping curves that are reminiscent of Focal's premium open-back Elear and closed-back Celestee headphones. The Bathys are built with Premium Over Ear Wireless Noise Cancelling Headphones materials such as aluminum and magnesium, which make them feel durable and comfortable. They are also worth the cost.

The Bathys Bluetooth headphones deliver a crisp, lively sound signature. They easily surpass consumer ANC devices of similar price such as the Sony XM5/5 and Bose QC45. They can be improved further by using direct DAC audio mode, making them a great choice for serious hi-fi enthusiasts.

With the Focal and Naim app, users can adjust the playback controls on their headphone as well as the virtual assistant and Bluetooth pairing preferences. You can select between soft or silent intensities for ANC, set the brightness of the LEDs that are on the ear cups, and adjust the settings for EQ. The app is basic but it has enough features to make it worthwhile.

The only issue is the active noise cancellation, which doesn't live in the same way as the other models. The headphone doesn't cut out all ambient noise like the most rated XM5 or AirPods Max, and its treble accuracy is subpar, with a muddy mid - to high frequency that impedes the instruments and vocals.

The Focal Bathys headphones aren't particularly portable. They're not suitable for travel since their ear cups do not fold and they weigh more than other models. The Bathys are best utilized at home for long listening sessions or as a reference headset for sound engineering. Despite their size and bulk, the Bathys are extremely comfortable to wear for extended periods of time.

4. Sony WH-CH720N

The Sony WHCH720N is a fantastic pair of wireless over-ear headsets at a reasonable price. The noise cancelling technology is fantastic and can do a lot to cut down the background noise. They are great for commuters or travellers. They also add a nice touch of premium quality with their durable construction and attractive matte finish.

They look similar to Sony's XB910N and Web site 1000X headphone models. They have a slim headband, with the usual ear cup hinges and a solid plastic build. They're lightweight and comfortable to wear, but they feel a little too compressed for my liking. In the box, they come with a USB-C port for charging and the 3.5mm jack and a decent length cable. They are compatible with multipoint Bluetooth pairing, which means you can connect to two devices at once, if you wish.

In my tests the CH720N's hybrid tech for noise cancellation did a great job of reducing ambient noise. There were only a few noticeable blips when walking through Waterloo Station and London Victoria. The sound-silencers did not block all sounds around them, but they did struggle with lower frequency sounds like the rumbling engine sounds of trains and buses.

Streaming music over the CH720N's Bluetooth connection was smooth, and it displayed a low level of harmonic distortion. I tested a variety of genres and discovered that they handled the intricate interplay between instruments with ease. It did a fantastic job of reducing the bass in rock tracks, and focusing the mix.

The Sony Headphones Connect App allows you to customize the CH720N's multipoint connectivity as well as ANC settings to suit your preferences. You can also add a variety of audio presets. You can also enable DSEE via the app, which increases sound quality and upsacles compressed audio content.

The WH-CH720N isn't equipped with some of Sony's primetime features compared to the XM5 (such as Quick Attention and Speak-to-Chat) they do offer a robust set of features available for PS130. 360 Reality Audio, smart controls and DSEE upscaling feature are all included. The only thing missing is LDAC Bluetooth high-res audio support I believe it would have been a great inclusion.
